I'm a light sleeper, if my cat were to run too fast down the hallway then I would wake up. Oh God how I wish it was the cat and not what awaited me that day. Slamming on my front door, the constant bashing would wake anyone but I woke first. I've always been the kind of person to act first think after, so i acted fast and without thought.
I jumped out of my bed landing with a thud, that's when my little brother woke up. I could tell because he started to yell and scream, this made the slamming get even louder. I ran down the stairs skipping every couple of steps. I burst into my parent's room but quickly remembered that they were out of town for the week. Perfect timing might I say.
I ran out of the room faster than I probably should've because I slammed straight into the front door breaking the small area of glass on it. My head had a slight cut on it and blood dripped down obstructing my view, but I was still able to make out the hand that reached in. I noticed the door was unlocked, at the time I was confused why they didn't use the handle. It sounded like there were five people outside my house at the time. I was scared stiff. I had no idea what to do.
Jumping to my feet I ran to my brother, he had quietened down but he was calling my name. When I got to his room he instantly pulled me into a hug. He had tears streaming down his face and he was softly hiccupping. He kept saying how he wanted mum and dad, how much he was scared. He was only seven and I was only twelve, I had no idea what to do. What was I supposed to do, my first thought was to head out the back door and book it to the nearest police station. Like I said I'm an act first think later kind of person, so that's what I did. I grabbed my brother by the arm and ran outside to the station.
As I ran towards the station with my brother following close I saw people in the town stumbling and reaching towards us. Bursting into the station I quickly announced my presence to whoever or whatever was there. "Hello is anyone there? I'm Jamie and this is my little brother Noah." I wish I didn't yell so loud. Stumbling out of the opening next to the front desk, what used to be a police officer emerged gurgling and stuttering out blood. Fear gripped me cold and hard, my brother screamed and I stepped backwards slightly inching away from the decomposing corpse coming for me.
The shambling corpse slowly moved towards us, stumbling an inch at a time. Noah grabbed my arm and hid behind me. I knew what this was. I had seen apocalypse movies before but I didn't want to believe it. A loud smash of glass broke my stare on the officer, tilting my head to the left I saw what seemed to be an older woman breaking the glass on the front door, this woman had managed to slam her chest into broken glass. She got up even thought there was glass protruding out of her chest, this got me to move, this got me to scream.
I shouldn't have screamed; I wish I had stayed silent maybe then I could've gotten away but I did scream. The officer lunged at me slamming me onto my back right onto my brother. I pushed my arms up to hold him high enough to roll out from under him first allowing Noah to slip out but before I could follow my arms gave out and I could only just lift his face away from me. I pushed out my voice to plead. "Please Noah, run, don't look back go home I'll meet you there." I already knew at the time I wouldn't be able to meet him but I needed him to have faith.
I saw out the corner of my eye Noah start to back away from me and the officer. I thought for a brief moment he was going to be safe that he was going to get out of this and find somewhere safe. Of course that moment of false safety was quickly smashed away when I saw him grab a nearby pole and knock the officer as hard as he could with as much strength a seven-year-old could possibly muster.
The officer was off for enough time for me to roll out from under him. I instantly grabbed the pole and took a swing at the officer smashing the front of his face revealing the hard skull underneath the crumbling flesh. I thought I was in the clear but then I saw him turn towards me and stare me dead in the eyes. Thinking fast I grabbed Noah by the arm and ran towards the door. The other person was still stuck in the doorway I couldn't get out the front. I needed to find another way.
I ran as fast as I could around the officer towards the back of the station. Heading to the backdoor I slam it open instantly regretting ever leaving my house. Running around to the front of the station I decided the best place to hide for a few days would be my own house. Once we rounded the corner to the main street I saw the destruction that flood out of every crack. There were decaying people laying on the road and others were shambling around, low groans escaping their mouths.
Noah started to lag behind, he was visibly shaking with fear. I quickly grabbed his hand pulling him towards our house. The creatures that were outside our house in the morning had moved on to a different house. I took the opening to run around the back of the house and pull myself inside through the window. Once inside I closed the window and ran towards the front door, I quickly locked it and pulled a nearby chair blocking the entry. Letting out a sigh I decided we were safe for the rest of the afternoon.
