Thin, slender fingers glided over the white keys of the grand piano, pressing down with ease. They gracefully made their way from one key to the other, making a harmony that was smooth and made hearts float. The noise it created was calming, yet exhilarating at the same time. Growing louder and quieter to keep the flow of the song, both hands able to go on their own at different paces.
The young girl stared blankly at the paper before her. Her eyes weren't even moving, as she had memorized the notes and melody, having played it several times before. Occasionally, her head would tilt and bob as she played, but her dull green orbs showed emptiness, like a puppet on strings.
She was oblivious to the class, ignoring their admiring gazes. She gave no hint that she even knew there was a room full of people watching her, especially when her eyes watered. Droplets of glistening tears rolled down her cheeks, but it didn't stop her as she continued to play. It wasn't compromising her playing and she gave no notice to them.
The song slowly came to an end and the spark of life gradually climbed into her eyes, as she looked to Ringo, their teacher. He only stared in awe and worry, before clapping and smiling again. He handed her a tissue and led her to stand and bow to the class.
"Thank you, Suzuki!" Ringo patted her on the back and smiled warmly, hoping to cheer her up. "That was a lovely song. Did you write it?"
Suzuki looked to him and shook her head. "No, my father wrote it. It was the last song he wrote before he passed." She wiped her eyes and bowed again, then went to her seat.
"Good job, Suzuki." Haruka smiled at her, looking encouraging as much as she could. Suzuki nodded but then rested her head on her desk. She wished to play more. She wanted to play the song until her fingers bled, until it was engraved into her soul.
There was nothing more for the class, only a couple played the piano of sang to their hearts contents. They had to pair up, but she wished to be alone. All she wanted to do was write songs, but without a singer. The piano always was the one thing she wanted to hear. It reached for her heart and wrapped her in warmth, leaving her body light and feeling as though she could fly. Other instruments along with it was even more exciting for her, but never a singer.
Saotome Academy was suggested to her by her father a while back, before she even reached the age to attend. If it was his wish, she would do it, but she was having a problem. It was for idols, who sang popular songs for those who where interested in it. There were singers and song writers. They paired up to create music, that was the job of this school.
Yet, she didn't want to do it that way. What was the point? She couldn't allow her songs to be tarnished by idols. Talking to the president, she'd have to make her claim to why should be without a partner. So far, she didn't have a roommate, and they were fine with it. She should be able to work alone.
The students stood up, and she realized now that Ringo had ended the class. Standing, she grabbed her bags and started down the hall. There should be a practice room open, and if so, she'd take it.
But a voice called to her from behind, and she stopped. "Suzuki!"
It was Haruka and a boy with red hair. The girl smiled and slowed in front of her, a least keeping her distance. "You did really good in class today!" He smiled too, but she had forgotten his name.
"Thanks." She muttered, watching the two. "Do you need something?" Two other boys had come up too, and looked to her.
A tall blonde with glasses smiled, taking her hands. "Suzuki, you're so cute, like a baby bird!"
"A bird?" The other spoke, questioning him.
Haruka noticed her impatience and hurried to talk. "We were wondering if you'd like to have lunch with us."
Suzuki turned her head away. "I was going to go to the practice room."
"Ah, speaking of which. How did you learn to play?" The red head grinned, tilting his head.
She eyed him for a moment, curious if he really wanted to know. "My father taught me when I was young. He would write me a new song and teach me how to play the piano. We'd listen to all kinds of music, and instruments was always my choice."
"Who are you going to partner up with?" The blonde asked, still holding her hand.
Closing her eyes, she tore away from his grip and stepped back, shocking them all. Looking back up, she let out a breath. "I'm not partnering up. I don't want anyone singing my songs."
Haruka frowned, but she tried to smile. "I hope we can write songs together. If you don't mind..."
"Not at all." She nodded to them and turned on her heel, walking down the hall again, towards the music rooms. Luckily no one was in either of them, so she took the one down at the end. The door clicked shut and she moved to the piano in the middle of the room, sliding into the seat and lifting the lid.
The tips of her fingers grazed the keys and she smiled, closing her eyes. They pressed down and a ring played out in the room, stirring her heart. She imagined the other instruments in her mind as she began playing, her chest fluttering. All she could remember was her father and she grew sadder, her eyes staring at nothing.
Suzuki enjoyed getting lost in the music, the sound filling the room like it was the only thing that was needed. It was the only thing she needed, as she smiled and closed her eyes, letting the melody take her in and encase her.
