The sounds around me were all mushed together, I couldn't tell what was machine and what was voice. I remember trying to get up but the ground around me was moving too fast. The lights started streaming by, making my head spin. My breathing was strained and I was gasping for breath. There was a sharp pain in my arm and then I started to black out. That's the last thing I remember from that night.
I walked out of the building and a sense of relief flooded me. The day was finally over. It's terrible being stuck inside a classroom for hours. It was one of those perfect April days that school ruins. The cherry blossoms had bloomed. The sun was streaming down. Even the wind was slightly blowing. It was as if taken straight out of a fairy tale.
I shifted the books I was holding and started walking home. It was then when I saw him. He was leaning on a white picket fence. His muscles were neatly drawn underneath his plain white shirt. His hair, although short, swayed slightly in the wind. He looked beautiful, almost peaceful standing there staring off. His green eyes shined in the light and his skin was illuminated. He was beautiful but the jagged markings on his face made my stomach flip.
I dropped my books as fear enveloped me. I couldn't move. He heard me and turned to me. A sickening smirk was plastered on his face. His green piercing eyes met mine and my legs began to fail me. He straightened up and started walking, wearing a disgusting toothy grin. I couldn't take my eyes off the pointed, sharp teeth.
"Did you miss me?" He laughs. The black marks across his face outlining the wickedness of his eyes as he stared me down.
"I- I just... It's been three months." I whispered. The words barely leaving my mouth as the shock wore off. That made his smile widen,
" Oh you did miss me!" He mocked, "I'm sorry I've been away so long I had pressing matters to attend to." His eyes gleamed in that moment, entrapping a secret I was never to learn.
"You can't be here. I-I have-"
"That pesky bracelet? Yes I know." He rolled his eyes as he interrupted me . "Did you really think that could spoil our fun?" He moved closer to me as he talked.
"Fun?" I laughed at the disgusting irony of it all. "You enjoy this?" I screamed at him anger taking over my fear. If he enjoyed this, I thought, there's no hope of him leaving me alone any time soon.
"You're such a party pooper," he feigned a pout. "I came all this way to play with you." He covered his heart in mock betrayal.
"Yeah well you can go back there, I don't want you here." I began as I started to pick up my books.
"Don't want me?" He gasped, "but what would you do without your precious boyfriend at your side?" He stood up straight like a solider.
"My boyfriend? More like my nightmare." I scoffed, "besides if you really were my boyfriend you'd carry my books for me." I was joking though. I just wanted him to leave me alone. He didn't, instead he took two of my books and started walking. I sighed and followed him grudgingly.
"Why don't you just put them in your backpack?" He asked, thumbing through the pages as he walked.
"My backpack is already full," I replied, shifting my books from one arm to the next. "And besides, we don't get exercise at school so this is like lifting weights." I tried to sound optimistic but it was hard with my stomach tied up in knots. I opened my mouth to say he should leave again but he interrupted me.
"Why do you have so many books? You get ten books and never even finish one. I believe that's called wasteful." He smirked at me again.
"I finish them!" I paused for a moment, "Eventually. I finish them eventually."
"Yeah if eventually means never." He mumbled. We walked again in silence. Occasionally I thought he was going to start a conversation but one look from me and he shut his mouth. I decided to just take a deep breath and try to enjoy the weather despite the unwelcome shadow following me.
The trees were dancing to the songs of the birds. The wind was playing with my hair. It was all so perfect. The tingling sensation of the sun on my skin competing with the coolness of the wind. I can recall everything about it even now.
The silence that I found so precious at that moment, had to end. We were eventually met with a fork in the road. I started to walk down the left path. Before I could even get three feet I heard him protest.
"Where are you going? You live this way. " He said nudging his head in the direction of the opposite path.
"I moved. I- Uh found this place more comfortable and I had enough money for an upgrade." At the moment I felt like I was reciting a script, those words didn't seem like mine. I didn't have much time to think about it though, He'd already jogged over to where I stood. That's when I first felt it again. The piercing in my ears. The weakness taking over my body, leaving me exasperated. The drowning headache. The shortness of breath. It's always hell the first time it happens. You expect it you just don't know when, it's the waiting that kills you.
When it hit I fell to the floor. He immediately reached for me and steadied me so I wouldn't faint.
"You can't start without me! I haven't had my bath yet, I'm not ready to play." He looked into my eyes, no joking appeared to be on his face. I thought he was the most despicable thing in that moment. I wanted to puke he made me so sick.
"Why do you like baths so much? You spent three hours last time, using up all my hot water." I groaned picturing the mess I'd have to clean up if he stayed.
"I need the baths to keep my skin so soft and clean." He explained. "Maybe if you actually tried to take care of your skin you'd understand." As the words left his mouth he stepped closer to me. His face was nearly touching mine as he inspected my, supposedly "retched", skin. I held my breath and just kept staring into his dark green eyes. From the angle I was at they looked kind and sweet, the moment was ruined when he opened his mouth.
"I think I'm going to puke!" He exclaimed throwing his hands into the air, causing him to move even closer to me. "You're skin is absolutely terrible! It's unacceptable for a woman your age. We are doing a deep cleanse as soon as we get the house." He started poking and prodding at my face as he mumbled things like "Lemons, I'll need lemons." and "Baking soda simply wont be enough."
"Look who's talking!" I replied pushing him away from me. "Mister 'I have tattoos all over my face.'" I glared at him as he balanced himself.
"These aren't tattoos, I already told you that." He answered sounding tired. I had already asked what they were ten times before. He had never once answered me.
"Well then tell me what they are!" I said, wavering only a little. The walk home was proving to be difficult but I didn't know how bad it was going to get. Of course He didn't answer my question, just diverted it with another one.
"So does this new place have a bath?" He looked away from me, trying to hide the truth in his eyes.
"Fine change the subject, I'll play-"
"You're volunteering to play with me?!?" He interrupted. With those words all the color drained from my face. I felt as if all my confidence was draining from my body, forming a puddle at my feet, leaving my an empty shell of fear. I started to see black spots and I felt dizzy. I remember a scream leaving my mouth but I could barely hear it with muffling sound of waves in my ears. That's when I passed out.
