Montags Departure
Montag lay on the ground, with his eyes closed. He began to think of everything that just happened and everything in general. He was thinking of the way he killed his boss with an igniter, the thing that Montag once used to use. He was feeling a pain. It wasn't physical pain, but emotional pain. The kind of pain that didn't affect his body, but only pain that went straight to his heart. It was like he was being ripped piece by piece. He was thinking of his wife's death, it felt like his whole world was being taken from him.
Montag was confused; he did not understand why he was feeling this pain toward his wife. He has never experienced this sort of pain that attacked him from the inside. After all, Mildred was the reason he got turned in for having books in the house, why he had to burn his own house. As he thinks, he barely knew his wife; he didn't even know where they had met. He knew he shouldn't care, but he could not make the feeling go away. Maybe the reason could be that Mildred was in the house, while he was burning his house ashes to ashes.
Suddenly he started hearing noises, like multiple twigs snapping in half. He slowly opened his eyes and looked around. The first thing he encountered was a burned book lying in front of his burned house, so helpless, knowledge and thoughts gone. He starts to feel more pain inside, when he saw more and more books just lying all over the ground. All burned no pages, and no words.
He heard someone walking towards him; he sat up with a melancholy attitude and looked over his shoulder. He couldn't believe who he saw, Clarisse. Montag didn't say anything; he was too shocked for words to come out of his mouth. Clarisse finally smiled and said "Hi Montag."
He shouted, "No this can't be, you were hit by a car and died. How are you here? This just can't be!" All of his emotions running everywhere, not a single thought were running through his head, everything was blank.
"It's okay Montag, calm down. Please let me explain. I'm sorry I didn't mean for this to happen, but I already knew you were different from the rest of the firefighters. I suspected that something like this would happen, so I had to leave as soon as possible and made you think that I was dead so you didn't come and try to find me. I came back because I heard what was happening and I wanted to help you, please understand Montag." He couldn't believe what he was hearing, his mind was hysterical, but he was so glad to see her.
"I understand Clarisse. Thank you, but how are you going to help me?" She leans down carefully "Come with me and my family to a place out of the country, where it is peaceful, quiet, you can enjoy your thoughts. You can read books, it is a luxurious place to be instead of this cruel place, all we do is follow the river," then all of a sudden police, firefighters, and citizens all coming running towards Montag and Clarisse.
Montag's heart like ice, froze. The air got thinner as if he were on top of the highest mountain. They were all shouting and yelling. The first thought that goes through his mind and managed to escape his lips was, "Run Clarisse!"
Clarisse listens to Montag immediately; he manages to get up and follow her and starts getting ahead of her. Their hearts pumping so fast, not sure whether to look back or not, all of sudden a loud gunshot was fired. Montag thought for a split second, was it him? No it wasn't, there was no pain, he didn't feel any metal going through him, but he was still running. He looked back and realized they shot Clarisse.
The pain started again when he saw her body just lying on the ground, helpless. He stops and realizes no one was chasing them anymore. He runs back to Clarisse, kneels down beside her and starts to feel an emotion he has never encountered before, liquid-like water, was falling from his eyes. He started to hear noises again; he looked up and noticed firemen coming towards him, people that he used to work with. They come quicker and quicker, and he just stays there not wanting to move, there is no point he thought, everything he once cared about was gone. They all approach him and say "Is this how you wanted it to end?" Montag looked up and says the last words ever to come out of his mouth, "This isn't the end."
