Bruno walked through the halls of a new school. Actually, his first school. He was in kindergarten, and was terrified. All new faces walked around, and Bruno knew it was there first day too.
"Ah, you must be Bruno Shepard." Bruno turned to see a man walking towards him. "Hi, Bruno. I'm Mr. Mulch. I'm your principal."
Bruno was already doubting this place. The principal's black hair was neatly combed, and his was just a brown mess.
They're all going to judge me! I just know it!
"You look like a special young boy. I think you'll be a great student!" Bruno blushed at the compliment although he knew it was stupid. This greeting was probably used for every student at this school. All Bruno did was nod a thanks.
"Alright, Bruno. If you have any questions just let me know." Then, he was gone. Bruno wanted to scream at him to come back. He knew Mr. Mulch was being fake, but at least he knew him. Bruno shook his head and kept walking.
~~~
"Sunshine?"
"Here!"
"Martha?"
"Here."
"Lucky?"
"Here."
"Bruno?"
"Here," Bruno said shaking a little.
The teacher went through a long line of names until she got to one specific one.
"Mickey?"
No response.
"Mickey?" the teacher repeated a little louder. Everybody looked around trying to figure out who Mickey was. The teacher sighed and shook her head.
"Missing on the first day of school. What a shame." She turned back to the children. "Anyways students, I want you to take out your journals and write about what you think kindergarten will be like."
Everybody started right away. Bruno couldn't think of anything. He sure as heck couldn't right "crappy" for an answer. He looked at the clock.
"Something needs to happen. Something that'll waste some class time," he thought.
The door opened.
"Please!" Bruno thought.
A short, black haired boy walked in.
"Oh. You must be Mickey." The boy nodded an crossed his arms. "I'm Miss Moon. Now can you explain why you're late?"
"Gladly," the boy said with a high pitched tone. "I didn't want to be here so I grabbed a really big kitchen knife, and I popped my mom's tires. All four of them." Bruno wanted so badly to clap for him. Why didn't he think of that.
"Well, that's definitely...strange...and uncalled for." Miss Moon shook her head. "Just go sit neck to him," she said pointing to Bruno.
Mickey walked to the seat and sat down.
"Bruno, explain to Mickey what our assignment is." Bruno just cursed to himself. He hoped this kid was nice. Miss Moon just sat at her desk and read a novel.
"Okay, so you get your journal and write about what you think kindergarten will be like."
"Sounds boring," the black haired boy said neutrally. Bruno snickered.
"It is," Bruno agreed. Mickey shook his head.
"Everybody else is talking, so why don't we." He was right. All of the kids were giggling and chatting instead of doing the assignment. Bruno nodded in agreement.
"Okay, what do you want to talk ab-" Bruno stopped when Mickey leaned down and grabbed something out of his book sack.
"Here," Mickey said handing him a blue bracelet that said "friends". Mickey then showed Bruno his own that said "forever".
"Friendship bracelets? But we just met." Mickey shrugged.
"I know that, but I can already tell," he said smiling. "We're going to be by each other's side for life."
With those words, Bruno knew that he had found his best friend. Someone who definitely stood out.
