Chapter 1 of The Hunter's Daughter in Michael's POV

I sit in the restaurant, my hands wrapped around my almost empty coffee cup. I've been sitting here for awhile, wondering if this hunter will show. But after an hour of waiting, I'm ready to leave. This isn't worth my time. Besides, if she doesn't want my help, what's the point of sticking around?

I'm just about to leave when a woman's voice stops me. "Michael Gray?"

I turn around and see an older woman with long, blonde hair standing there. I raise an eyebrow and stick my hands in my pockets. "That would be me. You must be Carol Perry."

She smiles. "Yes. I apologize for being late. I couldn't get off work fast enough."

I shake my head and flash her a smile. "No problem," I say and gesture to the table behind me. "Please. Have a seat."

"Thank you," she says, smiling back. She sits down and looks back up at me. "You seem awfully young. How old are you?"

"Twenty-two," I say. "I've been doing this since birth, though."

She nods. "You look like you've had some experience. I also assume that you are alone?"

I sigh and tip my empty mug. "Have been since I was sixteen."

She nods in understanding but says nothing more on the subject. "So you heard about the vampires in town?"

I nod. "Yeah. Thought it would be a great place to hang out for a bit. It's been awhile since I've had a decent hunt."

She laughs. "You're telling me. I haven't hunted in years. Ever since I had my daughter, I gave up on hunting. Had to move a couple times because they always seem to find me, but I decided I was done with running."

I nod. "So you're message said you know who these vampires are?"

She nods back as the waitress comes by. She orders a water before turning back to me. "Yep. They've been hunting me for many years. I knew it was only a matter of time before they finally caught up to me. And now they're taking it out on my daughter's classmates. I figured enough was enough."

We sit there for a moment in silence. The waitress brings Carol her water and refills my coffee. "What do you want me to do?"

She sighs. "I want you to befriend my daughter," she says. "Talk to her. Maybe get some information about her kidnapped classmates."

I nod. "I feel like there's more, though."

She looks down, looking sad. "Michael, I'm going to be honest with you," she starts. She takes a deep breath and doesn't meet my eyes as she says, "I've lived a long life. I know it may not seem like it's been that long, but I feel so old. I've seen so many things. I'm tired. I'm ready to face these vampires. It's just... I don't think..."

"You'll make it out alive?" I ask when she pauses.

She sighs, slouching her seat. "I know," she says. "It sounds pathetic."

"There's always a different way."

She shakes her head. "No," she says. "You need to help not just me, Michael. I need you to take my daughter to her father."

"And who is her father?"

She meets my eyes now, tears brimming them. "Winchester."

***

I take a moment to compose my story before I lift my hand and knock on the door, my heart racing. I've lied to people several times, but how can I lie to Carol's daughter when I know she is about to go off and get herself killed?
