Closets are often used for this metaphor,
But I prefer to use masks.
If you hid in a closet, people would question your where-a-bouts.
But everyone else is so busy worrying about their mask slipping,
They don’t even notice yours.
So when you take off the mask,
It comes more suddenly, shocking and confusing them.
But you remove it all the same.
We didn’t come out of our closets,
We simply took off our masks.
