The odds were stacked against Sonnet Lane, and soon enough, she knew she would have to stand in the face of death.
I can't believe this whole mess started yesterday. Sonnet thought to herself.

Like every other day of school for Sonnet, she sat in the very back of the voluminous classroom, staring out the window, wondering what there was to experience in life. She pictured herself climbing to the top of Mount Everest, firmly planting her feet in the deep snow on the peak of the mountain. She searched around, seeing only beautiful, puffy white clouds dispensing fleets of snow. She felt as if the scenery was nature's way of rewarding her for completing what most people would die doing. She then found herself peaking out the side of a helicopter, the sounds of the propellers booming inside of her ears. She looked down and saw that she could've been almost millions of miles into the air. She took a deep breath in, closed her eyes, and leaped from the opening of the helicopter. In an instant, the wind was blowing through her brown, wavy hair, causing it to flail behind her like a cape. From the sound of the air rushing past her ears to the sight of the ground beneath her, she felt as if she were living life the way it was meant to be lived - in excitement. She pulled the cord from her backpack and dispensed her all blue parachute, which instantly caused her momentum to come to a sudden halt, making her gently glide through the air.
All of this to do in life, Sonnet thought to herself with a sigh, pulling herself back to reality. And I'm stuck in this dumb classroom.
Sonnet found herself glaring out of the window once again, listening to the teacher ramble on and on about how to find X.
Everything about this made Sonnet feel trapped, from the incomprehensible mumbles of other students to the sounds of pencil on paper.
This was her life.
The bell gave a surprising ring that pulled Sonnet away from her deep thoughts. Just the lunch bell, Sonnet thought to herself, looking up at the clock.
Sonnet took one last look out of the window, this time surprised she was actually able to see something.
In the distance she could see a large black silhouette floating above the clusters of trees and houses. She couldn't seem to make out what it was; no planes in this time were made jet black.
The floating figure then ascended from above the trees, making it's way toward her classroom window... And it was moving fast.
The figure grew in size as it headed toward the school, slowly making the shape of what seemed to be a rotating saucer. Lights covering the equator of this enormous object flickered on and off. What was this thing?
Sonnet decided to stop scanning the figure and jumped out of her seat, her heart racing. She made a break for the door, diving in and out of the desks of various students. The teacher called after her, but by the time he did, she was already on running down the stairs of the third floor.
In the midst of her fast sprinting, she ran into something that made her rebound off of it, hitting the hard wooden floors.
"Ow...what the..." Mumbled someone in front her. Sonnet looked up while she lay on the floor, realizing that it was her best friend, Hannah. The blonde girl was searching the grown for her belongings, all of which were sprawled across the floor. As much as Sonnet would've loved to help, she needed to get out of this place.
"C'mon Hannah!" Sonnet screamed, grabbing her friend's hand and pulling her towards her.
"Woah there, Sonnet," Hannah said, making Sonnet stop in her tracks, looking back to meet her friend's eyes. "where do you think you're off to? I need to put my stuff inside of my locker!"
"Not now!" Sonnet said hastily, ignoring her friend's needs. "We need to get out of here!"
Sonnet began to sprint to down the stairs, dragging her friend along with her, until something shook the grounds of the school, throwing her and her friend off balance.
Sonnet fell to the ground, losing the grip she had on Hannah.
"What was that?" Asked Hannah, looking around as if trying to find an answer.
Immediately Sonnet could hear the screams of students from all over the school. Boys and girls were rushing out of their classrooms in fleets, running through the hallways. Sonnet rolled over until she hit the wall and sat up, regaining her wits.
It was complete chaos.
Rubble was falling from the ceiling overheard and the walls were falling apart. Sonnet looked off into a hallway and could see that a group of students were trying to free a girl who was covered by a large piece of dabris. Sonnet could barely make out the face, but the short brown hair stood out to her, almost as if she recognized this girl...
"Gracie!" Shouted Sonnet. She found herself getting up and running down the hallway, jumping over clusters of rubble on the floor. She rushed over to the large rock covering her friend Gracie and instantly got to work. She put as much strength as she could in removing the dabris, like the other students were.
In one final attempt to remove the rock, it rolled over, releasing Gracie.
Gracie ran over to Sonnet and threw her arms around her, but only for a brief moment.
"What happened?" Hannah said between large breaths. Sonnet had almost forgotten about her other friend. "Gracie are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Coughed Gracie, brushing off the dirt from the rock. "let's just go!"
Sonnet couldn't argue. She ran towards the main entrance, her friends following in her path.
Sonnet rushed the door of the main entrance and forced it open, emerging onto the sidewalk of the collapsing school.
"Guys..." Said Hannah, making Sonnet stop in her tracks. She looked up in the sky and was instantly terrified by the scenery.
The UFO crashed into the side of the school, but that wasn't the only one in sight. There were hundreds of them filling the sky, all going south of their current direction. The space ships seemed to be shooting red beems of light onto the ground, causing multiple buildings and houses to erupt in large flames in the distance. People were running up and down the streets, screams filling the air like sirens.
The world was complete chaos. Planet Earth was under attack.
