A Fight

For the first year, Sans stood near the entrance of the Ruins diligently, hoping that Frisk would come back, hoping that he could avenge what he lost, hoping, hoping desperately he could give that kid what they deserved. But no one came. And as the years went by, his hopes grew dimmer and dimmer, until they were practically nonexistent. He gave up. He went back to regretting what he didn't do in Judgement Hall, to his usual lazy attitude, and to his napping.

But this time, he swore to himself that he'd kill any humans that appeared in the Underground. He swore to take their souls and free monster-kind. He swore to protect what he had.

He told himself that he would be the one to wipe away humankind.

Yet, here he was, staring down at a human child. Not attacking them, not screaming or raging at them, not beating them into oblivion, just standing there, staring.

The human was curled up on the floor, crying, and rocking slowly back and forth. Unlike Frisk, who was almost always expressionless, this human was wearing her fear blatantly on her face.

This scene went on for several moments, before Sans came to his decision.

He would fight. He would fight for as long as he could. If he was going to annihilate humanity, and he couldn't kill a crying child, then he might as well give up the very thought of vengeance.

"...h-hey. kid..." He took a deep breath. He forced himself to remember all the innocent lives that were taken by that human.

His voice got stronger. "sorry 'bout this. but..."

He smiled maniacally. "i d o n ' t h a v e a n y m e r c y l e f t i n m e ."

"D I E ."

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy, when skies are gray. You'll never know dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away. You are my sunshine..."

Toriel sighed as she finished washing the dishes. She stretched and yawned before heading back to sit in her recliner. Sans was supposed to come back a few minutes ago. Knowing him, he was probably sleeping on the job again. She was going to have a bone to pick with him when he came back.

Toriel quietly chuckled to herself.

It's not as if she blamed him for sleeping. Occasionally, she would wake up in the middle of the night and find him crying and screaming about "Papyrus" in the next room. She would ask him what happened, but he'd adamantly refuse to console her. And when she'd bring up her desire to see Frisk again, he'd simply shrug and look away or change the subject. Plus, she had discovered that he was incredibly lazy, so voluntarily standing guard for humans seemed strange. It wasn't hard to put the clues together.

The guilt of this realization weighed down on her every night. Yet neither she nor Sans ever mentioned it. It was easier to laugh, to smile if they ignored it.

She rubbed her eyes and glanced at the wavering flames of her fireplace.

The food was gonna get cold at this rate. Apparently, she was going to have to retrieve Sans herself. He didn't usually sleep for this long, so she felt slightly uneasy.

She briefly regarded the cooling mashed popatoes and pumpkin rings on the table before taking them with her.

Then, Toriel headed toward the Entrance of the Ruins.

As soon as the skeleton said "DIE", your body went into auto drive. All of your thoughts ceased existing, and your entire being focused on one thing: staying alive.

So when you turned into a small pink heart, you didn't panic. When another pink heart appeared next to you, you didn't run. When you saw the amount of health you had in your peripheral vision, it didn't frighten you. You calmly dodged the bones and lasers aimed at you, and ignored the pain of the attacks that met their mark.

Problem was, you found that the second pink heart was also under your control. Controlling one proved to be hard enough, but two was almost impossible. Strangely, though, his attacks didn't have much affect on you. You could see his frustration and effort ever increasing, but no matter how much he tried, his attack only took away 3 points of health at best.

The skeleton seemed unsettled at the appearance of your second heart, but continued to deal out a flurry of blows and attacks without a word, while you tried your best to dodge them.

This exchange continued for awhile, and right before you were about to give out, he said something.

"you monster. how many people have you killed?"

He finally stopped attacking, which gave you enough time to take a good look at his face.

He was crying. This brought you back to consciousness. Somehow, even after he tried to kill you, you felt yourself trying to comfort him.

You tell the mysterious skeleton that you've never killed anyone.

He rubs the tears out of his eyes and curls up into a ball.

"i don't believe you."

You insist that you've never killed.

"i don't believe you."

You tell the him that you've never even used a knife.

"I DON'T BELIEVE YOU!"

Taken aback by his outburst, you back away.

"i don't...believe...y-you..."

Hesitantly, you reach out to touch him.

"NO! GET AWAY FROM HIM!"
