The Boarding School Prince
Chapter 2: Hello, England.
A warm welcome was not something Sophie usually got from people but Aunt Rosalie and Mae showed real hospitality the moment they picked her up at the airport.
There was a big difference between the country Sophie came from and and the country she was in now. Unlike in America, England had a cold, gloomy, gray weather. It rained almost 200 days out of the year which was fine with Sophie. She was not really an outgoing type of person.
"...and we're only allowed phones on weekends." Mae paused for a while. She had not stopped talking since they got in the car.
Sophie found it nice of her to be giving her a brief introduction about the school they would be going to tomorrow, though she was not in the mood for chitchat.
She just nodded and smiled from time to time to keep Mae talking. Sophie found her cousin effortlessly beautiful, that she wondered if she had or would ever be like that.
Mae's deep green eyes glistened as she spoke. Her auburn shoulder-length hair bouncing with every turn of her head.
Sophie studied her reflection on the car window. A pair of hazel eyes stared back at her, a long, thin nose, and full pink lips. She had the same ivory skin like her cousin's, at least it would not be obvious that she was from an entirely different continent. Her wavy chocolate brown hair was now reaching the curves of her waist, she just had noticed.
From what she could remember out of all the things Mae said, The Breckenridge Academy was a coed boarding school. It had 4 houses namely: Arterberry, Woodlock, Bloodworth, and Fairbairn. Each student would be randomly assigned to a house - at the Welcoming Ceremony tomorrow - where they would be staying for the whole year.
First day would be consisted of the Welcoming Ceremony, settling in, and orientations, and an acquaintance party on the second day where all students from the 4 houses could mingle. On weekends, a bus would take those who want to go to the city but nowhere farther than that, and it was also the only time they would be allowed to use mobile phones.
She felt no excitement. Even in her old school, she was never one of the cool kids. If there was a song with the word loser being the only lyric all throughout, it would be the soundtrack of her high school life, hearing it every time she passed through the halls.
She knew she was no one but a daughter of a waitress (who now had lost her job). The people she had met made that perfectly clear, rubbed it in her face by treating her like trash.
The car pulled over. They were already at the front porch. Aunt Rosalie's house was like a home pulled out of a dream. It was not grand or stylish. The simplicity of the mint green walls and common glass windows was enough to make Sophie want to take in the view.
The air smelled sweet with the scent of flowers surrounding the whole area including the walkway which was in between two rows of pink and white peonies, most were in full bloom. The lamps at the sides of the front door were lit, orange and yellow fire flickering in the midst of a gray atmosphere.
"Make yourself at home, dear." Aunt Rosalie smiled as they entered.
"Would you like to rest first? Do you want to sleep in the guest room or Mae's?"
Before Sophie could answer, Mae objected. "Are you joking, mom? Of course she'll sleep in my room. We have a lot to talk about."
"Uh, yes. Thank you, Aunt Rosalie." was all Sophie could mutter.
"Come!"
Mae grabbed her wrist and led her upstairs.
"Uh... My things..."
Mae turned to look at her. "Leave them there. You don't have to unpack. You'll be bringing those tomorrow. Boarding school, remember?"
One year in a totally different school. Yey. If she did not have much luck getting along with the Americans, what better chance did she have getting along with English people?
