Chapter 5

Shai's POV

I watch as Theo sleeps, his head still in my lap. He is quiet, his even breaths and occasional stirrings giving no sign that he is having bad dreams again. I kiss his forehead, intertwine my hand with his, and soon find sleep myself.

We are awoken by a rapid knocking on the door. The noise startles me, causing Theo to bolt upright as well.

"What is it? What's wrong?" He asks frantically. I shrug and he stands up. His hair sticks up on one side from sleeping on it. As he walks over to the door, the knocking becomes fiercer. When he opens it, the woman standing in the threshold nearly punches his face, taking Theo aback. Recognition washes over his face as he realizes who it is. "Mum?" he says, incredulous.

Theo's POV

"What are you doing here? They just let you in?" I cry.

"I wanted to see your new mate, Theodore!" my mother crows, reaching to kiss me on the cheek.

"How do you know...?"

"Well, last night was your movie premiere, was it not? The whole thing was televised. I saw you ask out your lovely colleague. She's quite pretty, that one. I hope she treats your right. And you better treat her right too. Men don't deserve beautiful girls if they can't respect them."

Shai is blushing. I know it. But Mum hasn't spotted her on the couch yet, wearing only a t-shirt. She wouldn't necessarily approve.

"Mum, would you like me to take you to lunch? I can bring Shailene and you two can get to know each other. Sound good?"

She ponders it for a moment, then agrees. I tell her I will ring her and plan where to meet, and she leaves.

"That was close," whispers Shai. "I'm glad she didn't see me in this state, or she would think badly of me." It's cute that she cares how much my mother thinks about her. I pull her in for a hug, wrapping my arms around her waist, and kiss the top of her head.

"I'll tell her we should meet up at 12:30," I tell Shai, checking my watch. It is eleven-thirty right now. "Is that enough time to get ready?" She nods, and walks off to the bathroom to shower.

I hope this lunch goes well, I really do. I love Shai and I respect my mum, so if my mom doesn't approve of Shai, I will be torn.
