(Gratt's POV)

I suddenly jolted awake as I heard the door open. I immediately scrambled under the bed and laid there silenty. The human closed the front door behind them and locked it before coming into the room. My heart was racing a mile a minute and I panted heavily but silently in a weak attempt to catch my breath. I silently begged that I wasn't seen or heard.
My heart started to slow down as I finally caught my breath. Slowly I closed my eyes and took my shaking hands off of my mouth. The human sat down at their desk just to the right of the bed. I scooted to the corner and turned my back to the human. Calming myself down I thanked the gods that the human didn't see me or hear me.
I listened as the human scribbled onto a piece of paper. They were probably doing homework. I kept my eyes glued shut and turned over onto my stomach.
The scribbling stopped.
My breathe hitched in my throat and my eyes shot open.
Oh no! Oh no! Oh no! Oh no! Oh no!
I squished myself into a tight ball. My knees on my chest and my forehead on the floor as I lay on my stomach. I tucked my arms under my chest and hoped the human didn't notice.
I didn't hear any movement so I let out my breath quietly. Suddenly something touched my back and made me let out a loud squeak. I quickly slapped my hand over my mouth and started shaking.
A soft, low voice spoke "wh-who are you?". I stiffined and turned towards the human. They weren't looking under the bed so I relaxed a bit. I was so in shock that my mouth went dry and I couldn't even speak. I shut my eyes tightly waiting for any other words.
"I'm Lee. What is your name?" he said quietly. I didn't know what to do. If I told him my name would he report me? "I like your n-name" I said trying to stall the conversation. "It s-sounds cool" I continued unable to stop my body and voice from shaking.
I shivered as goose bumps pricked at my skin. Lee spoke again "Why are you under my bed?". "I uh, well you see, the thing is-..." I stopped and took a breath. I uncurled from my ball position and reached a hand out from under the bed in a handshake. "Hi, I'm Gratt" I said softly.
I could tell Lee hesitated before sliding his hand into mine and shaking it. I nearly melted at the feeling of his skin. Being able to make contact for the first time in years was unimaginable. It was like years of thirst being quenched. I wanted to touch more. Suddenly Lee tightened his grip on my hand and yanked me forward into the open. I yelped in surprise.
I slowly turned my face up to see Lee. His handsomeness killed me as I stared in awe. He had medium brown hair that rested in front of his forehead and ears. His brown eyes showed off speckles of light like stars in the night. And his cheeks were dusted with freckles. When I finally snapped out of my daze my brain began to process what had happened.
Instantly I panicked and tried run towards the quickest way out of the room. I darted for the window. Lee held onto my hand with a painful grip. "Wait! Don't leave! You're a mutant right? I'm a mutant activist!"Lee announced.
I froze not daring to look at Lee. Tears started to sting my eyes and threaten to fall down my cheeks. Lee pulled me back to him gently. I sat down in front of him and stared at the floor. Neither of us spoke for a while even though I knew he had a million questions. We just sat in silence thinking about what would come next. I thought about what to say and how Lee would respond.
Everything was quiet until Lee spoke up. "Do you have anywhere to go?" He asked. I shook my head sadly and continued thinking. Thinking about what would happen after Lee reported me even if he was a so called 'mutant ally'. Thinking about all the new things I had experienced that day.
"Do you want to stay here? Well I guess you already are" Lee said with a nervous laugh. I snapped my attention up to him and his brown eyes. Strands of hair fell onto his forehead like bronze colored thread. I couldn't believe Lee was asking me to stay. I nodded my head excitedly. "Of course! I would be grateful!" I exclaimed. My gratitude seemed to get across quite well as Lee laughed at my excitement.
My cheeks warmed up with embarrassment and a smile etched itself into my face. Lee noticed that my eyes started to water a bit when he looked at face. Quickly I wiped away any moisture that escaped my eyes. "Sorry" I whispered looking down at the floor again. "It's fine" Lee said his smile fading. A concerned look replaced the curved line of Lee's lips.
The room fell silent once again but this time we both knew what laid ahead.
Life was a lonely road and mine was finally merging with another.
Lee cleared his throat before asking "Are you hungry?". I nodded my head meekly as Lee got up to walk to the kitchen.
Waiting patiently I played with a string that was coming off of my sweater sleeve. When I pulled at the string my old red sweater began to unravel at the bottom of my sleeve. It was fascinating to watch as the string pulled away from itself. Winding around and up my arm, I pulled the string again and watched my sweater fall apart.
"I started to boil some water to make mac-" Lee stood in the doorway and looked down and me and the tangled mess of red yarn in my hand. The entire left sleeve was now tangled in a mess of red yarn on the floor. "What did you do?" Lee asked even though he already knew the answer.
"Uumm" I replied staring at Lee blankly. Lee sighed and pinched his nose jokingly with a small smile on his face. "I'll grab you something else to wear" Lee chuckled leaning against the doorframe.
"Thank you".
