I hissed lightly as light filtered through my eyelids and temporarily blinded me as I took in the scene before me. It had been only a week since I had come to stay at my uncle's country home, but I was coming to love how the sun seemed to make the grass greener and water clearer. It was a nice break from my old San Francisco apartment. My parents had recently lost their jobs, both being layed off due to tax cuts. They just happened to have the wrong jobs at the wrong times. After my mother came home with my father wrapped around her shoulders wearily we had been tight with money. Since I had barely begun high school and still hadn't made friends, I decided that the best possible decision was to spend the remainder of high school with my uncle in Dallas, Georgia. It was a pretty little city that nobody has ever heard of with plenty of rural homes as well as urban apartments. My uncle just happened to live in one of the in-between homes, where modern appliances and antiques collided. I went to a small public school at the end of the street, and my uncle was overjoyed to have a new occupant in his fairly empty home. School was nice, days were long, and the sun was bright.
"Gabriel, get up! School isn't going to wait for your arrival, and tardiness is not an option!" My uncle called to me. I sighed and rubbed my eyes, pushing tiredness away and getting out of bed. My alarm clock on my bedside table blinked at me with red flashing numbers, practically screaming that it was 7:34am. I groaned, knowing school didn't start for another hour. Peevishly, I stalked down the hallway and stepped into the bathroom, quickly doing my business then turning on the shower, bringing it to a scalding temperature before stepping in, making my skin red on contact. I quickly washed my hair and scrubbed dirt off of my body, then hurriedly put on a pair of boxers before walking swiftly to my room and picking out an outfit. I, personally, wouldn't call myself emo or anything. I just have a tendency to wear all black. I quickly slipped on some tight skinnies and a long affliction tee, then trotted downstairs where my uncle had set out some waffles and syrup.
"Thanks for breakfast," I mumbled great fully before digging into the heaping plate of sugary breakfast food. My uncle watched me eat for a moment before remembering something and smiling at me.
"I completely forgot, but the neighbor's kid, Dominic, said he'd pick you up for school earlier. Nice kid really..," He continued to chat mindlessly about the neighbors while I thought of the irony of how my name was an angel's while his was associated with demons. When I realized my uncle had left to answer the door, presumably for Dominic, I rushed upstairs to grab my iPhone, headphones, and bag before rushing back down only to find who I'd assume to be Dominic sprawled across the couch. His skin tone was nearly the opposite of his, my pale completion sharply contrasting with his bronze, and his brown hair looked natural enough, unlike my obviously black-dyed hair. He wore clothes similar to mine, black skinnies and a band tee, but rather than affliction it was BVB. He also wore multiple band brackets and necklaces, but a single silver band rested on his left pointer finger as if to prove that he may have jewelry but was definitely not a girl with flashy rings and piercings. He smirked at me, as if complimented by my quick look over of him.
"The name's Dom, I presume you're Gabe?" He inquires, his eyes running up and down my body, assessing me like I had done to him.
"Gabriel, not Gabe." I corrected. He grinned.
"You ready to go, Gabriel?" His grin grew. "My bike's up front." He taunted.
"Wait, bike as in Motorcycle?" I questioned, excited.
"Nah, I meant my tricycle," He intoned sarcastically. I snickered.
"Oh, duh, Motorcycles went out of style few months back, eh?" I retorted with equal sarcasm.
"Of course, now it's rainbow tricycles and juice pouches, Motorcycles and alcohol died out last June, I think," He looked so serious at that moment I finally burst out laughing.
"Okay, you win, you win. Gabe it is, Dom. Let's head out before John starts petting you because you're 'such a nice kid.'" I nailed my uncle's southern accent on the last bit and cheered silently. Dom and I joked the rest of the way to the from and he made me close my eyes as I entered the driveway to my new home. He told me to go ahead and look and I was greeted with the beautiful sight of a red '96 Harley Davison Motorcycle. I gasped and inspected it closer, overjoyed at it being the one bike I've wanted to ride since childhood days. I couldn't restrain myself, so I just walked right over to Dom and gave him a huge bear hug.
"Now might be a good time to tell you I'm gay," He laughed, his voice muffled by my jacket. I suddenly turned red and stepped back.
"How odd that you mention that because, so am I..."
