Cameras flashed and reporters spoke into microphones. They all asked me how I'd done it, how'd I'd saved the human race. Well, I'm a scientist. I solve problems in creative ways. The vaccine was no different. As I looked across the sea of faces, one stood out. I'd seen this one before, looking down gunsights at a teenage girl. He'd killed her over a can of beans. And I had seen even worse in the panic and anarchy that followed the outbreak. Every reporter, cameraman, and speaker there was as guilty as that man. So was I. We'd done terrible things to survive. Regret struck me; I regretted saving the human race from a microbial genocide. But by saving man, I had only damned him to suffering again.
