Carly sighed and laid on the mat. She didn't want to get up, or deal with Victoria. She was on her last nerve. Keeping her eyes closed, she feigned sleep.
She felt a strong hand on her arm.
"Now, honey, we all know you can't hide when you're asleep. Your skin changes color," whispered a gentle voice.
Carly groaned. She hated her ability, her skin changes different colors based on her emotions.
Seth snickered, "Come on, get up, my queen."
Carly, grudgingly, got up. She wasn't a queen, but he made her feel like one.
She was bracing herself to get up and Seth bent down and scooped her up in his arms. He twirled her once and set her on her feet.
Reaching down, he grabbed her comb and helped her brush her  , unruly hair.
He kissed her on the top of the head and walked around the tent to grab her dress that was the same color as her skin.
It was a short dress with wide straps and she sown pockets in it for work. She wore her black, cheap sandals with it. They were sturdy and comfortable.
Seth smiled and twirled her around, "Beautiful."
She admired his sculpted muscles from years of hard work. He had raven black hair and the deepest green eyes. Green eyes were rare but so was her hair color. They were the odd pair.
"Time to get to work, Mrs. Pratt," he ran a hand through her hair.
Her skin turned lime green, annoyed, "We've been married for three years, you can stop calling me that!"
He chuckled and grabbed his red shirt. It was a tank top that shows off the muscles in his arms. They rolled up the sleeping bags and walked outside.
The sun was bright today, making her already green skin greener. There were four other tents around hers, well there were twelve tents total. Almost everyone had a special ability, Taki could make any fruit or vegetable grow from any plant.
Her skin turned a normal, human hue. Seth grabbed her hand and they waded through the tents to the center where the food was being finished. It was some type of fried apples and some sausage .
Seth got her and his own plate and they sat in the grass and ate. The elder would coke out and give their daily tasks.
Feanor giggled, "Well, Carly is bright yellow! We know it's good."
Carly turned pink, embarrassment, and buried her face in Seth's shoulder.
He whispered to her, "She's just jealous she isn't as pretty as you."
She shook her head and laughed, "Why are you like this?"
The elder came out of his tent, scratching his head. He started handout assignments for the day. A messenger came and handed the elder a letter.
He grumbled, "Alright, children. We are going to have to pack up and move this afternoon! The armies battles keep getting closer to our position. Besides, I'm tired of this place anyway."
They all laughed and they were reassigned tasks. Seth was to gather firewood and some small game. Carly needed to gather nuts, because they didn't spoil easy, and fees the horses for the journey. Of course, they were in groups. No one can do all that in one day.
Walnuts, chestnuts, and acorns were what Carly was assigned. She was teal, concentration. She had filled her basket up and handed it off to the Cooper's, they kept up with all the supplies.
She ran to the horses and put a hand on her and Seth's, Rose. She fed the horses and watered them. It was almost noon. Lunch would be ready soon. Her skin was maroon, tired. She smiled and started towards the camp.
She grabbed a sandwich and sat down. Seth wasn't back yet, but Victoria said she saw them finishing up. The elder's wife, Clara, told everyone they would pack up tents and load horses after lunch.
The twins, Jack and Jeese, tumbled over each other. Jeese froze and put out the fire and Jack toasted his sandwich. They always sat back to back, talking their six year old babble. Their parents, Jill and Joe, sat near by keeping an eye on the camp's trouble makers. Joe had a bad leg so he couldn't get around real well, but he was still helpful. A bear had got him while it was trying to kill Carly, who had wandered too close. Carly often looked after the twins for them.
Twyla spun around, wanting attention. She was the youngest in the group, at two years old. She had brown hair and eyes. She could create bubbles from her finger tips. Twyla spin right into Carly's lap.
"Hi!"
Carly laughed and turned yellow, happy, "Hey, Twy."
The men were returning. Seth smiled at the sight of Twyla and his wife. If only he hadn't messed up, she could have kids too. It was all his fault.
He was glad his feelings weren't as obvious as Carly's. He grabbed his food and sat down next to Carly as Twyla ran off to her parents.
"Hey, baby," he said.
"Hi," she set her head on his shoulder.
"I'm glad your happy."
She snorted.
Zor came and sat down in the circle of people, "So anyone heard any news about the king and Queen?"
Everyone was silent. Joe chimed in, "Do you think their still alive? The uprising was a year ago, they can't survive without protection."
Zor nodded, "Yeah, royals are delicate."
Ta sighed, "I don't know why anyone would want to remove them. They were such good rulers! The country prospered, low crime, and almost no poverty."
Jill put a hand on Ta's shoulder, "People are power hungry. They wanted the throne, the king and Queen didn't have a chance."
Carly had turned light blue, sad. Carla clapped her hands together, "Lunch is over! Time to pack up, young' ns!"
Everyone popped up and started packing. Seth and Carly had the smallest tent. Carly turned yellow-green, sick. She bent down and threw up in the grass. Seth ran over and held her, patting her back.
"Okay?"
She nodded, turning to a sickly yellow, not as sick. They finished packing up. This was normal, ever since that night that Seth screwed up. They put the tent on the back of Rose and hopped on. Seth's arms wrapped around her, grabbing the reins. He kissed the back of her head, "I'm sorry. Are you ready?"
She nodded, trying not to puke again. The elders were at the point and the group took off.
