                When I finally left the
restaurant, I made two stops at two different supermarkets to pick up Diane's favorite chocolate cakes for school the next morning. It was about 7pm when I walked into the house to find Miguel sprawled out on the sofa snoring and Diane sitting on his chest and poking her fingers into his ears.

"Dianee!" I called out to her and smiled and her hands flew to her back immediately, her cute little face forming a mischievous smile. I walked over to the sofa and scooped her into my arms and walked over to the kitchen.

"Guess what mummy got?" I asked her eagerly as I placed her on the kitchen counter.

"My chocolate cakes!" She stated matter-of-factly. I groaned.

"Can't you just be a normal kid who isnt so smart at three?" I laughed and she smiled as well. "Who wants spaghetti?"

"I do." And I echoed. I brought out the pot from the cupboard, poured water into it and set it on the stove.

"Diane, how was school today?"

"Wellll," she began. "Mrs Megan was really cranky today and Jimmy Dean got a black dot fereet." She giggled and kicked her legs back and forth.

"Dianee, don't laugh at him." I smiled at her.

"I got a gold star today as well." She put her hands to her sides. "For handling the situation maturely', that's what Mrs Megan called it."

"What situation?" I said as I cleaned my hands on a paper napkin and turned towards her.

"Jimmy Dean laughed at me for not having a dad, he said I'm not a normal kid and now you said the same thing so I feel a little bad." She muttered.

A stray tear fell rolled down my cheek and down to the floor. How could such a little kid understand this much? I wasn't sure if I was terrified, surprised or depressed at this point. It made me wonder if I had made the right decision by not giving her up for adoption. How could I have though that she wouldn't need a father? In no time I had scooped her up in my arms once again and was hugging her so close to my chest that she probably had trouble breathing at this point, I placed several kisses on her cheek while she stared at me clueless.

"Why are you crying mommy?"

"Because, because you're so beautiful and sweet and you're not normal because you're so special baby." I rambled as I placed more kisses on her cheek.
"And noone in the whole world is as special as you are. Okay?"

Okay? Heavenly Diane, tell your daughter never to forget this.

"Okay." She said and yawned and rested her little head on my shoulder. I walked towards her bedroom and before I set her down on her bed she was already fast asleep, so much for wanting spaghetti, I thought as I put out the lights.

At this point I knew what I had to do, I had to contact someone I dreaded.

. . .

A few months after Diane died and I was left with little Diane, I had two moods: wanting to die and wanting to live, no in-between, just two costly extreme ends of the stick, I was constantly on the verge of sonic depression. That was until I met Miguel, and he managed to pick up from the mess of myself. The age difference made him much more of an older brother rather than the proclaimed knight in shining armour, but at this moment as he drove on the highway arguing, I kinda wished I was the older one in the relationship so I could smack him for being so pussy.

"Were not turning around Miguel." I stated as I glared at him.

"You seem to have forgotten which one of us is behind the wheel." He tightened his grip on the steering wheel and his bulky muscles were visible through his suit jacket. "I haven't practiced law since I got the darn degree Vic." He coerced.

"Well now is your precious chance." I insisted. "We talked about this and you agreed, why are you changing your mind now?" I sighed and leaned back. " I can't afford an actual lawyer right now and it's just a settlement."

"A settlement? You're agreeing to settle?"

"Yes, I called Lucas yesterday. So I just need your signature don't freak out, you freak."

"We're good, then." He said with a sly smile.

. . .

In thirty minutes we arrived at Fidson pharmaceuticals, I was clearly underdressed with my sneakers but it was an impromptu meeting. We arrived at the conference room and Lucas was already staring at his watch, furious, his lawyer staring lazily beside him.

I coughed. "Sorry were a bit late." I coughed again before sitting down and Miguel following suit.

"Two hours is not a little late." Lucas stated.

"Mr Stimson." Lucas' lawyer got up to shake my hand but I ignored completely, but of course Miguel got up and shook his hand wholeheartedly. I rolled my eyes and I caught Lucas glancing at me with an amused expression on his face, but in a second it was gone.

"Miss Burnes, before we start, Mr Foster would like to make a statement." Mr Stimson said before glancing at Lucas, so did the rest of us. Lucas' jaw tightened at the summoning.

"I- I have something to say as well." I ventured.

"I would like to take you up-–"

"I guess I could take you up on–"

Lucas and I said at the same moment and we both echoed: "Wait what!?"

"Did you just say my offer is fine for you?" I ventured, scooting closer so I wouldn't miss a word of what was about to exit his perfectly carved mouth.

He coughed and glanced around nervously. "I don't believe so. But I think I heard you saying something about taking me up on mine."

"No, you did."

"No, you did."

"Ugh! I'll see you in court then."

"My pleasure!"

And for a moment we sat there glaring at each other like children as Mr Stimson buries his face in his palm.

"Can I please talk to my client in private." Mr Stimson said as he gestured to Lucas who reluctantly followed him outside. In a few minutes they were back in with Lucas looking uncomfortable.

"I'll take your offer. We settle out of court." He said without sitting down and a scowl was evident on his face as he walked out of the conference room.

"Victory, Vic." Miguel hooted as he slapped me a high five. I smiled knowing I was losing any which way.

"You know, I've never seen you this childish before, and I don't know if it's for Diane or because you just don't want to lose to Lucas." Miguel said as we walked across the car park.

"Little bit of both. Race you to the car!" I broke into a run and I looked back to see Miguel grinning and standing and in no time he was trailing behind me, not being one to ignore a challenge. We ran till he was not more than an inch behind me. I grinned as I increased my pace and I could feel the cold wind banging against my face and I couldn't help but feel like I had been denied the privilege of being this care free and this agreement had just handed me my stolen privilege back on a silver platter, and it was thanks to one man.
