I wake up in a cold sweat and out of breath. That same dream, the dream that has been haunting me for months now.
Quietly I get out of bed being very careful no to wake up Jade. It's been six months now that we have been searching for other survivors, I'd say we are about twelve thousand survivors now, between the first, second and Third World War, the Third World War was definitely the most disastrous. The worlds most advanced technologies were used to create the worlds most deadliest weapons, those weapons were used to destroy the other countries.
Japan's first move was to unleash it's new and improved atomic bomb in the middle of South America, nobody knows why they chose South America, but they did. That bomb began the war, the war lasted 5 years. I spent those years running for my life.
I was in my hometown of Toronto, Ontario when the first attack took place. It was on the news that night, everybody was in a panic wondering where the next bomb was going to hit.
Jade called me crying, her parents were visiting in South America when the bomb hit and she hadn't heard from them saying they were okay. A week later we got a call saying her parents were dead, the were in the town where the bomb landed.
Within a month, over 55 countries were involved in the war, government vs government, country vs country, terrified citizens running for their lives, taking their families and running as far as they could.
Jade and I have been through most of North America and parts of South America running for our lives. We've been through bombings, enemy fire, enemy attacks and aerial attacks. It was a very hard 5 years for us all, but finally in 2027 we made it to an abandoned military base in Texas which is where I met my closest friend Ghislain but we all call him Gigi.
He saved Jade, he risked his own life to save her's, he didn't have to stay and help us, he could've left us where we were, as I was watching my true love slowly slip away from life. Without him, my beautiful fiancé would be dead because she wouldn't of had the proper care she needed.
All of these events got me to where I am now, walking the lonely halls of the residential area of the base, alone wit my thoughts.
But that's when I hear it. The faint sound of a gun being fired. Before I even registered my actions I was running towards the sound, hoping, praying that it was only someone practicing and not another suicide, that would make the fifth one in the last three weeks.
But I'm too late, the young boy's body lays there lifeless. But he wasn't just any boy, I knew him, his name was Tyler, he was 15. Jade found him scared and alone in an abandoned building in California, she was like the boy's mother, Jade showed him that even when the world was going to hell, you could still find some good in it.
I dropped to my knees in front of his lifeless body, before I can stop myself I feel a steady flow of warm tears streaming down my face. That's when I noticed I'm not alone in the room. Slowly I turn my head to the right and that's when I see Gigi standing there, head down, and I instantly know what he's thinking, he wishes he was back in his small hometown in his comfortable bed, safe and sound from all this danger, no wars just peace. But his home is gone, his home is no more.
He walks towards me and places his hand on my shoulder. Slowly I rise to my feet and turn to face him, he pulls me into a hug and we just stay there, supporting each other. The hardest part of all of this is that I'm going to have to tell Jade that the boy she raised for four years is gone and he'll never return.
After a long pause I turn around and go back to my room, leaving Gigi alone with Tyler's body. I take as much time as possible to return to the room, wiping away my tears as I go, slowly calming myself down, I walked the entire residential block before finally returning to my room.
I open the door to see Jade sitting on the edge of the bed, she's been waiting for me to come back. As soon as she sees the look on my face, she immediately knows how what happened.
"Who was it this time?" Her words echo through my head as the tears begin to form in my eyes.-It's, no. I don't want it to be. It can't be!
She cupped my face in her hands and made me look at her and once again asked
- Who Noah? Who was it?
I can't look at her when I say his name, it comes out a whisper
- Tyler.
She drops to the floor, shock and tears streaming down her cheeks.
- Mother of god, no! It can't be. It can't be! It just can't! She wasn't talking anymore, she was screaming, crying, begging, praying that it wasn't true.
- Noah, please tell me this is a sick twisted joke, please tell me this is a lie!
- Baby I'm sorry, it's true, I saw it with my own eyes.
I knew she needed me, I took her into my arms and let her cry, I held her so tight, I'm surprised I didn't break her. But eventually sleep took over, in the morning she only had one thing on her mind. She wanted to see him, she wanted to see his body, a final goodbye.
I kept telling her it was a bad idea, but she was determined to see him, one last time.
Finally I gave in, I walked her over to the room where I found Tyler's body. She walks over to him with a stone cold face, but as soon as she's close, she drops to her knees crying, touching his face, asking him to wake up.
I made my way towards her, the same way Gigi walked towards me yesterday. I saw the pain in her eyes, it was still unbelievable that the boy she raised was gone.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
