I plopped into a seat near the back of the classroom where detention is being held today.
I am the first here, and it starts in five minutes. I guess most people who get detention aren't too keen on being punctual.
The teacher looks bored out of her mind and casually flips through a magazine.
The door opens and Jace steps into the room. He's wearing a grey sweatshirt and black ripped jeans. His blond hair is windswept and messy. It looks amazing.
I am having serious hair envy.
His eyes land on me and I quickly look away although he obviously caught me staring.
My eyes fixed on the desk in front of mine, I see him sit next to me in the periphery of my vision.
We both stay silent for a second and then I find myself whispering, "hey."
"Hi."
"What did you do to earn detention on your second day here?" I say.
"Oh nothing, just a fight." He says casually, as if it's no biggy.
"Oh." I say, kind of intimidated.
The door to the classroom opens then, and I am relieved not to be alone with Jace any longer. He seems nice enough to me, but a fight on the second day of school? I wasn't going to be friends with someone violent.
Two goths slump into chairs at the back of the room and three more people enter the class and sit near the front.
The teacher doesn't reproach them for being late, in fact she doesn't even look up.
There's still no sign of Finn and I start feeling a little panicked.
These people aren't who I hang out with. These are the rebels and risk takers of the school.
Jace would have been a comfort had he not told me about the fight, making me unsure if I want to be friends with him.
Finally after what feels like an eternity, the door opens and Finn comes in. Looking absolutely irresistible.
There's only thirty minutes left so I don't know why he even bothered to show up.
He sits on my other side and I can't resist a deep breath in of his addictive scent.
"Why is THAT guy sitting next to you?" He says in a protective voice.
"His name is Jace. And he can sit wherever he wants to." I say, annoyed.
He doesn't reply and I can see he's hurt by my words, and I just want to hug him and say sorry, but I resist the urge.
He was late and left me alone with people I don't feel comfortable with.
He seems to pick up on my emotions as only mates can, and looks at me concerned.
"What's wrong? Did something happen? Are you hurt?" He bombards me with questions.
"No. Nothing like that happened. It's just I don't feel comfortable here and I've never been in detention without any of my friends and Jace was.. Nothing." I hastily say as Finn looks ready to tear Jace apart.
"Jace did nothing Finn. It just would have been nice to have you here on time. That's all." I say in a small voice.
My concerns seem petty now and I wish I had kept my mouth shut.
"Hey. I'm sorry I'm late. An issue came up in the pack and my dad wanted me there for experience when I take over the alpha role from him. If I'd known you would feel uncomfortable, I'd have been here for you."
