FLASHBACK
May 26th, 1985 Bray County Wicklow, Ireland
"UNCLE!!!!" A three-year-old little girl screamed as she kicked away from her father and ran for her favorite person.
"Oh Christina, I've missed ya love." Her uncle replied his accent thick as he embraced the tiny girl in his arms.
Christina smiled completely unaware as to why she was moving here. Her father had simply helped her pack her things, loading her stuff into the car then they were off. Christina tucked herself into her uncle's arms as her father and uncle embraced and cried together for a reason Christina at three years old would not yet understand. Her uncle set her down in his living room then helped her father unload her things while she watched television.
Her father was already ready to leave bidding his baby girl and his little brother goodbye for what would be the last time. Christina held her father tight as he cried to her. "Christina baby. I love you. Please don't ever forget that. You were the best thing that ever happened to me. I love you my princess. Goodbye baby girl." Her father cried and he let go of his little girl for the last time.
She told him she loved him too and smiled her bright smile at him and waved as he drove away. "Let's go inside sweetie. Then we'll invite our neighbors over for dinner. How does that sound?" Her uncle smiled down at her wiping away the last of his tears.
"Neighbors?" Christina repeated cocking her head to the side.
"They are really nice people who live in the house next to us." Her uncle explained. Christina just smiled and nodded with a tiny yawn. "Time for a nap. Let's go have one together okay?" Christina only nodded and her Uncle snuggled her into his chest and carried her to bed where they fell asleep for a short while.
When Christina woke from her nap, she could hear her Uncle talking to someone downstairs, so Christina slid down the stairs carefully only to come face to face with a little boy no more than a year older than herself. Christina just smiled and gave a shy wave before running past him to find her uncle. Scared of the strange people in her uncle's house.
"Finally woke up did ya love?" He asked as he scooped her up with a kiss to her small cheek. "I have people I want ya to meet okay? This is Mr. and Mrs. Devitt. Can you say hello?" Christina responded with a small hello then her uncle set her back on her feet only to come face to face with the little boy again. "This here is Fergal." Her uncle said pointing to the boy. Fergal waved at her and she smiled.
"You my new best fwiend. Okay?" Christina smiled hugging the boy tightly. Fergal giggled and hugged her back with an 'Okay' before they ran to the living room and began to play with a bag full of Lego that Fergal had brought with him.
The two had played for hours. Christina trying to understand his words but with great difficulty and trying to say his name properly with even more difficulty. They talked and played until her Uncle called them for dinner. Once everyone was seated Mrs. Devitt began to ask Christina questions.
"How old are you sweetie?" She asked.
Christina held up three fingers and counted them before announcing she was three. "Hey! Me too!" Fergal announced as well before the two burst into a fit of giggles.
"I think they're gonna be the best of friends don't you agree Darryl?" Mr. Devitt asked my uncle.
"I couldn't agree more lad." He replied smiling at the giggling children.
The rest of dinner was filled with questions toward Christina and the sound of children's laughter. When dinner was finished Christina and Fergal played some more before it was time for him to go home.
Christina wasn't not happy with it and demanded that he stay as they hugged one another tightly. The three adults sighed before telling the children that they could play again tomorrow. Fergal could come over again after breakfast. They reluctantly let go of one another before waving goodbye.
Uncle Darryl finally got Christina changed and into bed without a fuss and read her a bedtime story before retreating to his own bed once Christina had fallen asleep. With only a whisper of "Goodnight princess and sweet dreams" hanging in the air, he fell asleep as well.
NEXT DAY
Christina had been up gotten her teeth brushed, used the potty, ate breakfast and had a quick bath when she finally heard the knock on the door signaling Fergal's arrival. When her uncle opened the door, Christina flew at Fergal tackling him in a hug as they both fell to the ground in laughter. Mrs. Devitt explained that she had errands to run and asked Darryl if he would mind watching Fergal as the kids played. He had no issue with it of course and bid her a farewell, sending the kids to the living room to play.
Fergal had once again brought his Lego over with him and asked Christina if she wanted to play with them. The two children had sat down to play, and her Uncle had put on some kids shows while they played. He smiled seeing Christina so happy, with her new friend.
Christina had finally come to a conclusion after hours of playing that she had decided on a nickname for Fergal, because as she explained to him and her uncle his name was to hard to say. "I'm gonna call you Finn!" Christina exclaimed clapping her tiny hands together. Fergal smiled at her and nodded and okay. Christina was proud of his approval and hugged him tightly. "Pwomise you'll be my fwiend fowever?" Christina asked him.
"I promise!" Fergal agreed before they went back to their Lego building.
From that day on Christina and Fergal were inseparable, and the nickname stuck with him ever since.
