"You're the first person who broke my heart.
For the rest of my life, you will always be the one who hurt me the most.
Don't forget that."

"Mommy? I'm hungry." a little girl tugged at her mother's sleeve. She was shrugged off. "M-mommy. Can you make dinner?" came the soft whisper.

"Shut up, you little brat!" hissed the mother as she roughly shoved the child away. "I do everything for you! Get a snack or something." the girl flinched away from the coldness in the woman's voice. She walked away with her stomach growling in protest. Another night without dinner.

"She yelled again, didn't she?" the girl turned and saw her sister. She nodded. "It's okay, Enola. We can just ask if we can have dinner with the neighbors."

"B-but won't mommy be mad, Ekatsim?" Enola whispered.

"Stop calling her mommy, she doesn't deserve the title." Ekatsim said, glaring at the woman who sat on a stool. The mother stared at her phone, eating pizza she ordered. She didn't bother sharing it with the two children.

"Come on, let's go." Ekatsim grabbed Enola's hand and pulled her towards the door.

"Where are you two brats going?!" the woman growled, looking up from her phone. Enola and Ekatsim ignored her, opened the front door and walked out. "GET BACK HERE!" the woman shrieked. The girls walked towards their neighbor's house and asked if they could dine with them.

That night, the two girls had dinner with the big, happy family. They smiled and laughed, but envy squeezed their hearts.

Why couldn't their family be like that?
