the next morning | 9:00 a.m.
i opened the window and tugged my beanie farther down my ears. the morning fog created a dull gray tint over the city skyline that was comforting. i stepped through the window and reached back inside to grab my coffee mug off the ledge.
as soon as i settled on the balcony i noticed jace sitting with his legs through the railing and hanging over the street below. his forehead rested on the metal rod in front of him and there was, of course, a cigarette perched between his fingers. he almost looked dead or maybe just asleep. maybe just extremely hungover.
"sorry if i ruined your alone time last night." he sneered, not looking in my direction as i sat down, my legs matching his position.
hungover. "i only needed alone time because your music was pulsing through my apartment and it was annoying."
he laughed. "sorry."
we both stayed silent. i didn't know what to say or if i even wanted to say anything more.
"is she your girlfriend?" i spoke first.
"the girl you were creeping on with me last night?" he rotated his head so his face was now facing me but he still held his weight against the cool metal.
i glared at him. "yeah."
he brought the cigarette to his lips. "yeah."
i nodded.
"for two years." he continued.
"well congratulations."
he exaggerated a smile showing off his teeth, dimples forming at his cheeks and his eyes squinting tight. "thanks."
i took a long sip of my coffee. it actually surprised me that he had a girlfriend let alone a girlfriend for two years. he didn't seem like the relationship type to me, but i suppose i actually knew nothing about my neighbor.
