I smiled with delightfulness. My white teeth that resembled the snowy mountains in Antarctica showed through my smile.

CLICK! The camera man in front of me snapped a shot. Once again, I did it. I had scored the highest in my level. I was now high on the stage, holding a certificate with the words 'CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT AWARDED TO ELLY ROSLYN FOR TOPPING THE LEVEL'. I have to admit, the kids hate me. Maybe they don't, but I'm 100% sure they envy me.
I walked down the stage with pride as my eyes scanned the crowd for the sight of my mother. Where is she? She was initially supposed to go up on the stage with me but she did not show up. Is she late? Thats odd. Momma wasn't late for anything, not even for catching the ice-cream man at 3 every afternoon to buy me and my little sister, Ella Roslyn, our favourite chocolate chunky.
I sat near the entrance and waited. A few minutes passed. My best friend went up the stage. My teacher went around giving us snacks. My principal congratulated the achievers. But still no sign of Momma. Suddenly, a voice roared through the speakers. There was an announcement.
"Paging for Elly Roslyn, please report to the school's main office. I repeat, Elly Roslyn, please report to the school's main office. Thank you." my ears perked up. What happened?Everyone knows you only go to the main office if you get in serious trouble or if there is an emergency. Everything else is taken care of at the general office.
I hurriedly rushed down to the main office. Maybe there really is something important, Elly. When I reached there, my father and Ella were waiting.
"Pappa? Ella? What are you doing here? Do you know where Momma is? She didn't show up for my prize-giving ceremony." I pouted.
"Elly, we need to leave now. We're going to the hospital." Dad explained.
"Wait, what? Hospital? Why now? Did Grandmomma's condition get worse?" I questioned. Pappa looked at me with a serious expression that said, El, we NEED to go now.
I followed him with confused thoughts racing through my mind. Everyone was silent throughout the car ride.
We reached Avlynn Hospital soon after and I followed after. Pappa stopped right in front of a ward and we went in. Inside, Momma lay on the bed, looking pale and tired as if the blood was drained out of her. I was concerned.
"Momma? Why are you here? Did something happen?" I asked with worry in my tone of voice. Momma looked up and she had difficulty sitting up. Leaning on the plastic board of the bed, she said slowly,
" Elly... Momma has... cancer. Its serious. The doctor said it has reached the fourth level and... there is only a few months left for me in this world."
I froze. It felt as if my legs were rooted to the ground and a force was pulling me down. I could feel the weight on my shoulder and I fell to the ground, crying, I was shocked and worried. But most of all, scared. I wasn't willing to let go of Momma who raised me up.
I cried till my eyes turned red and the next thing i knew, i couldnt catch my breath due to the crying and I passed out.
