George knew where Brittany Dwight was at all times. It wasn’t that he was a stalker; Brittany lived in the identical apartment above George’s. But Brittany didn’t even seem to know that George existed. They went to the same school, were in the same classes and lived in the same building, but Brittany never spoke to him.

One day, as the bus pulled up and George and Brittany got off, George saw that Brittany was crying. In a spur-of-the-moment decision, George called to Brittany.

“Brittany!”

“What?” Brittany snapped.

“What’s wrong?” George asked.

“Nothing.”

“Why were you crying?” George asked.

“I wasn’t.” Brittany wiped her eyes hurriedly.

“Oh.”

Brittany turned towards her apartment, then to George. “What’s your name?”

“I'm George.”

“Ok. I’ll tell you. My little sister, Samantha, has cancer. The doctors only gave her a few weeks to live and I don't want her to die. I’ve never told anyone, I don't know why I'm telling you. I barely even know you.” She sobbed.

As she walked back to her house, Brittany called over her shoulder. “Where do you live George?”

“The apartment under yours.”

“Where have you been; I never see you.”

“I’ve been here the whole time.”

Brittany’s mom called her, but as Brittany ran to her apartment, she smiled and waved to George.

“See ya later, George!”

George grinned as he walked back to his apartment.
