~At Camp Singer~
"Hey Dean... Yeah, long time no talk, huh? Hahaha... Listen, I heard from your brother you were looking for a job. Have I got the job for you!"
Bobby was sure Dean would pitch in. His younger brother Sam worked as a lumberjack; he had built the cabins for the children of the camp.
"What do you mean you don't like children? You work great with them."
There was a short awkward pause on the other side of the telephone. Dean was remembering his fiancée Lisa and her child Ben. Dean had to leave the family for work reasons.
"Look, I didn't mean to hint at the past, son. I'm just telling you the truth. Children love you. So... How'd you like to be Camp Singer's head counselor?!"
xx~Ellen's Diner,
California~
Ellen Harville ran a diner just on the outskirts of the big cities. It was a small, quirky, little known about place, yet it stayed a hangout for all the locals. Their best costumer was Sam Winchester, a business partner lumberjack. He dropped off firewood for them to sell in exchange for a burger and milkshake on the house, Ellen's treat.
Sam was grateful for the diner's location. He stopped by almost every Friday after a long day of chopping down trees to make small talk with the two women, mostly reminiscing times in school with Ellen's daughter. Her daughter, Joanna, also known as Jo, was his brother's age, but she had been very kind to the Winchester brothers throughout their rough teenage years. This Friday evening was nothing out of the usual routine. Jo got off her shift at 5 PM. Sam pulled up in his red and white pickup truck as soon as the sun started to go down and the flashing lights outside of the diner were turned on.
"Hey pretty lady, how's it goin?"
Jo lowered her cigarette and rolled her eyes. He was sweet, but he wasn't the right guy for her. Sam was just an old childhood friend, nothing more. She had reminded him often what Dean would do if he knew that they were flirting.
"Dammit Sammy! I told you not to call me that!"
Her cigarette now out, she stood up to untie her apron from her waist and walked toward the tall young man.
"Golly, I'm sorry, Joanna."
"Jo."
"Sorry Jo. I really am. How was business today?"
"It was alright. Pretty much the usual. Francine had a short fuse today. She came in snapping at me, all red in the face about her husband not wanting to have their anniversary at her mother's house. I hate having to take her shit all the time. She thinks she can lay it on me like I'm part of her perfect little life. I'm only her waitress and all, right?"
Samuel scoffed,
"You're only her favorite waitress! Geez, the only reason she blabs too much is because she sees you as a friend to lay it all out on. She trusts you. You're easy to trust."
He scratched his shaggy beard and took off his cap to rake his hands through his chocolate brown hair.
"Well, I never thought of it that way. Oh, please, hand those bails of wood over, I'm more than happy to take them and set them up out back for the weekend. Almost summer, thank The Lord."
They unloaded the truck together, singing along to the new hit single, "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison. Time flew by in a quick summer daze. Soon after they just had settled down, she gave Sam his burger in a bag to go, it was time for Ellen to close up.
