Chapter 1

“Lulu” little Daniela yelled “it’s time for dinner lets go down stairs?” she continued while peeking through the door. Lucinda glanced back and smiled at the little five year old girl waiting patiently for her in the corridor. She loved Daniela more than most little girls she knew because she was so innocent and sweet, her curly blonde hair, big blue bright eyes and freckled face were just too cute for anyone to ignore. Lucy had had the urge to protect the little girl from the first time she had been bought to the orphanage. Daniela like most of the children in the House of Grace orphanage had been abandoned by her teenage mother and left at the door step of the poor orphanage in a basket, Lucy who had answered the door that fateful morning had most likely developed such an attachment to the little kid because she had been the one who had discovered the little bundle of joy. The orphanage even though barely affording to provide for the children at had never turned down a child without a home. Lucy quickly stood up, headed towards the door and scooped Daniela from the shiny tiled marble floor. She giggled in delight and tried her best to wiggle free from Lucy’s gentle grasp. “I’ll race you downstairs” Daniela challenged as Lucy put her back down and opened the door. “Sure” Lucy responded feigning excitement while pretending to chase after her.  “I win again” Daniela squealed happily while doing her funny little victory dance, it always bought a smile to Lucy’s face. “Of course you did, you the fastest little girl on the planet” said Lucy smiling at the child fondly. “Now go wash your hands so you can sit with the other children” Lucy said nudging Daniela towards the taps. She gently lifted her up, helped her wash her tiny little hands then handed her a small plate containing her dinner. “Thank you Lulu” Daniela said while running of to join the rest of her friends around their little miniature table. All the kids at the orphanage looked up to Lucy and usually treated her like an older sister even though none of them were related. She really didn’t mind as she loved the kids with all her heart and she kinda figured out that she was their older sister in a way. Lucy who was only seventeen was also an orphan and had been at the House of Grace orphanage from the tender age of one. At least this is what the letter her teenage mother had left her with had said. Her mother had also named her Lucinda before abandoning her but had not left her with any surname or information on the rest of her family. She no longer resented her mother for leaving her anymore because she had once volunteered in helping teen mothers before and was well aware of the hardships they faced. Her only regret was that she hadn’t gotten to meet the woman who had given life to her; she had even accepted the fact that she probably never would.

Lucy made her way towards the teenager’s dinner area when she saw Jack sitting alone at their usual table. They were roughly the same age and had been bought to the orphanage on the same day but by different mothers. Jack was apparently a couple of days older than Lucy and this was a fact he had used against her in countless of arguments involving seniority and maturity. Lucy had always considered Jack as a brother and they usually fought and bickered like any two siblings would. Despite the bickering and fighting Lucy loved Jack and really couldn’t imagine her life without him. Lucy pulled out a chair at their usual table while offering him a big apologetic smile. They had been sitting at that table since the first time they had learnt how to feed themselves and the place was sorta sacred to them. All the children at the orphanage respected their spot and always refrained from sitting there. It was sorta like a special place for them where they could have privacy and talk about anything without the possibility of an interruption. “You late” Jack said “I was about to go back upstairs” “I’m sorry but I was sending out emails” Lucy replied while nibbling slowly on her apple.
