"There you guys are!" Zay calls out as we reach the porch of Lucas's grandfather's house. "We have been looking for you guys everywhere. When were you?"
"Just walking," Riley says. "Where is Lucas?"
"He just left. Him and Farkle are out for dinner. We are meeting up with them, well, now. Ready?" Riley looks at me and I nod and Zay, Riley, and I all walk together to a small bar looking restaurant. We make awkward small talk, but all I could think of was how silly Lucas would think I was for liking him.
"So its not much," Zay says, "But this is like Lucas and I's well, third home." He pushed the door open to reveal a restaurant with tables and chairs and a cleared out middle space for dancing. In the corner, Lucas and Farkle had ordered some ribs and were already eating.
"Riley!" Lucas shouted. "Get over here there is still some good food." Riley sat down next to Lucas and I got up to get some water to escape the frenzy of my friends. Suddenly I felt a strong tap on my back and I whipped my head around to find Lucas and his topaz blue eyes just staring at me with a concerned look on his face.
"Hey," he says. I stick to my promise and keep filling up my cup of water. I decided if he wanted to risk his life in a stupid way then he didn't need to converse with me. Clearly he had not caught on to these hints.
"Maya please look at me." I set my cup down and turned around. "Thank you. Now, what happened? I thought you didn't care about me at all." I look down at my shoes. "Oh come on Maya! You are acting like a child. Speak to me."
I picked up my cup and walked around him to sit at the table with my friends. I was done spending so much time thinking about Lucas Friar. Here I am in a great music city and I want to dance.
"Zay," I say, "Feel like dancing?" I raise my eyebrow at him and he offers me his hand. "I would enjoy that Maya."
"Great." We walk together onto the dance floor as the guitars compliment each other song after country song. We dance and pump our fists in the air and laugh. We were having so much fun. Finally a slower song came on and Zay hesitantly put his hands on my waist and I placed my hands on his broad shoulders.
"So Maya," He says questioningly, "Whats up with you and Lucas?"
"What?" I say surprised that Zay paid enough attention to realize that things had been tense between me and Lucas. "Nothing," I say lying. It didn't matter, he could see right through me.
"Maya." Was all he said.
"Look do we really have to talk about Ranger Rick right now? I mean how many times do you get to go to a real life hoedown with your chaps and dance around in cowboy hats?"
"Every night if you live in Texas." I laugh. No one realizes how funny Zay is and its a shame. "But seriously. How are you?"
"Im fine."
"You're not." I say nothing. He's right. I'm not, I just don't want to talk about it anymore. It's like if you spend all your time thinking about something in your head, you don't want to talk about it all the time too.
"You're right," I say. "Something is off and I don't know how to fix it." Zay readjusts his hands on my waist.
"Well you know I am always here if you need to talk right?" Zay avoids my gaze, "Or anything else you need really." Just then, a pretty brown skinned girl with curly black hair and big brown eyes spots Zay from across the ballroom and yells out his name.
"Vanessa?" Zay takes his hands off my waist and turns around to see the girl staring at him. "No way.." Zay mumbled as he walked over to her, completely oblivious that he had just been dancing with me.
