Ria's POV
His crystal blue eyes stared down into mine intensly. His voice caught for a second, then he spoke. "Are you alright?" "I dont think thats the question that needs to be asked" i whispered. He stared at me for a long time. Then he kissed me. It wasn't hungry or, to light. It was gentle, but steady. When he finally broke away a single tear ran down my face.
"Ria," he said concerened "what did i do?" I couldn't speak so i just climed into his lap and laid my head agaisnt his shoulder. I looked at him sadly. "You act like this, but then you go and date her" i whispered hoarsly "who is real... and who is fake." He sighed "there is something i need to tell you Ria." He grabbed my hands and just gazed at me for a while. Im not quite sure what he was doing, but i was willing to wait.
"My parents were broke" he said. I nodded my head in agreement, Faith and i had talked about this before. "Ericka was rich as hell," he added, "and my parents needed the money so badly." He looked at me, his eyes shiny with unshed tears. "My dad made a deal with her parents" he said, almost inaudibly, "we would never be broke again, but I had to work there and be the future face of their company and you know that that meant." "You would have married her" i gasped.
He nodded, and just gazed at me heartbroken. "But Alex, your parents are no longer here, and niether is hers, why do you have to still stick to it? " i said "its not like she can just go tell on you or anything." He looked slightly annoyed at himself. ""Ria, i feel like if i dont keep that promise, i would go against my parents wishes" he muttered "normally i wouldn't mind, but i promised my dad."
He looked like he was about to cry again, and i grapped his hand. "When we were in the hospital, my dad had looked at me, and whispered, telling me to look after mom." "He asked me to keep his promise, so i could help mom." He started crying silently. "I couldn't save her in the shooting, and now i feel like i can do the one thing they both wanted." He looked up at me with steadiness and i looked back. "I can keep my promise."
To say i was shocked would have been a major understatement. He would give up... his relationship and live with that...thing, just to soothe his dead parents that made him promise to marry someone he didnt love? Alex had always been very respecful, and honor his promises...but this seemed like it should be an exception. I turned away, so Alex wouldnt see the conflicting emotions on my face.
Suddenly he grabbed my shoulders and turned me to face him. "Ria," he said sternly "don't you dare think for a moment i dont love you and want to be with you." "But by now, you should know me well enough that i dont end my promises." He looked at me, pleading silently with his eyes. "Please understand."
"I wont lie to you Alex." "But, I ..." i rubbed my forehead, trying to get rid of the headache creeping up on me "I wont contradict you." I sighed and crawled out of his arms, laying down on the couch. He laid down behind me and wrapped his arms around me. The last thing i remebered hearing was his faintly whispered words reaching my ears.
"I love you."
