Mr. Smith had finally agreed to go with William. After the front end of a car got blown in through his shop window, he agreed out of pure fear. William had just about screamed when the car hit and stopped just far enough away for him to squeeze out.
"This stuff had better be good, especially since you owe me for that window." Mr. Smith was anything but happy at the time, tired and already annoyed with the sudden death experience. He was, in a way, excited though. Since he heard of the incidents at Wintergreen he had wanted to check things out for himself. Now was his chance to do that.
"The real kicker is the voice. You're just going to love this." William rolled his eyes sarcastically and smiled. The two were just getting to the basement where the stack of furniture had moved to the farthest corner of the room. Smith's eyes glowed, he had never seen such well-polished furniture at older than just a few weeks.
The two made their way over to the stack, pulling chairs from the top. It must have been amusing to watch, the two of them scrambling back and forth moving chairs and small tables from the stack. The little girl had said nothing so far, but they were quickly approaching the bottom of the stack where the desks had been left at.
"Don't move that...you may not like what you find." The girl chimed in after Mr. Smith began dragging a desk out of the way. He rolled his eyes, not entirely believing this was another person talking. He began pulling the desk out more and then an odd smell began to fill the room around them. The door slammed shut, making the walls shake and the ceiling crack.
Bits and pieces of the wall began to crack and fall out, revealing a small opening. Mr. Smith, who was still not sure he believed this, had enough. They took the furniture they had already moved and headed back into town.
Back in town, near the church...
Luna and Elizabeth were pacing back and forth in the churchyard. Daniel, who had been resting all evening, was now dead. The two girls had went downstairs to help some of the other guests when they heard him scream. They were too late, however, and when they arrived all that was left of him was his beheaded body lying half way on the floor. Luna, having spent a lot of time with the old man since his arrival, had never imagined he could have been in danger. Even with her ability she was unable to detect any sort of danger to the man, not from near her.
Her thoughts went to the orphanage. If something there had been tampered with, it may have set something off outside. William and Mr. Smith pulled up to the church and scrambled out of the car. They looked as though they had found something important, but could barely catch enough breath to say it.
William hadn't noticed the two standing there yet, as a matter of fact, he expected Elizabeth to be at the hotel still and had no clue who the shorter girl even was. Mr. Smith had enough of the whole mess, leaving his card with William and taking the furniture back to his shop.
"Where's dad?" William looked at the two girls, confused. They looked at each other and then back at him, looking away again afterwards. Neither of them said anything; they just stepped aside so that William could see Daniel being buried.
