~story start~
Ino and Kaiya were just two children in their academy class, outside picking flowers. Kaiya was acting pretty depressed lately and Ino was determined to get to the bottom of it.
"What's wrong, Kaiya?"
Kaiya looked up and shrugged, holding a single flower in her hand.
Ino frowned, and Kaiya looked away. She didn't want to face Ino today.
"Tell me what's wrong! You've been like this for awhile now."

Kaiya sighed. "I don't know. I just feel really alone a lot. I don't have friends. I'm not popular like you, and I don't even know why you're friends with me to begin with. You're like a Cosmos flower. And I'm just a Thorowort*..."

Ino was taken back. "Well, I don't see why I shouldn't be friends with you! You're great and deserve to have someone there for you. I don't care what other people think cuz you are my friend!" Ino huffed.
Kaiya looked up and blinked. Tears started to cloud her vision. She tackled Ino into the grass in a hug.
Ino gasped, and then returned the hug. She pulled herself to her feet then Kaiya. Ino grabbed Kaiya's hands and looked into her watery eyes.

Ino kneeled in front of her and gently said, "I don't think you're a flower at all yet, you're still a bud waiting to bloom. Let's just say, I think it'd be a real big waste for you to wilt away as nothing but a bud... I mean, how sad is it if flowers don't ever bloom? For all we know, that little bud could become a flower even better than the Cosmos." Flowers started blowing in the breeze.
Kaiya gasped and the tears started flowing. Ino brought one hand up to cover Kaiya's cheek. Her thumb rolled some tears away. She stood up and wrapped her arms around Kaiya and she leaned into Ino's touch, still crying.

That was five years ago. They're both now 12 years old and graduated from the academy with their own teams. Kaiya was put on squad 7. Kaiya and Ino have distanced from each other a little bit, not for the same reasons as Sakura though.

Ino was training with her team when news arrived that squad 7 had returned from their three-week long mission in the Land of Waves. They were unaware that Kaiya was severely injured. A villager told them that they were headed straight for the hospital.

Squad 10 skidded into the hospital entrance and saw Kaiya's team sullen-looking.

Kaiya stood with Sakura protecting the bridge builder while Sasuke and Naruto faced Haku. Zabuza sneered at them, saying how they had no chance against him. Kaiya growled and attempted to attack him. Kakashi noticed a little too late and Zabuza slashed at her.
Kaiya gasped and pulled back as the gigantic sword came down. It nicked her shoulder, making blood ooze out slowly. She growled, holding her shoulder.

"Kaiya!!!" Sakura and Kakashi yelled.

Zabuza moved in again, but Kaiya dodged and moved back behind Kakashi.
"What were you thinking?! That was reckless!" Kakashi scolded.
Kaiya grunted, now letting Kakashi take control of the battle.

Eventually the fight picked up. Haku was dead from Kakashi's lightning blade, and Zabuza was about to kill Kakashi. Kakashi panicked for a second as the sword glimmered.

Suddenly Kakashi was thrown back. Everyone gasped. Kaiya had pushed Kakashi out of the way and now had the sword plunged into her stomach. Her shirt was already soaked. Blood spurted from her mouth.
Kaiya glanced at Zabuza and tried throwing a kunai. Zabuza grimaced and pulled his sword out, dodging the kunai.

Kaiya smiled weakly, then fell to her knees and collapsed. Kakashi had already put Haku down and was kneeling next to Kaiya. She was hardly alive. Sakura and Tazuna were with Sasuke. Naruto was yelling at Zabuza, and then Gato showed up.
