Katherine swung open the door.

"Anne! How lovely to see you again!" she cried kissing her on both cheeks.

"And you, Katherine. I have so much to tell you, it's almost unbelievable!"

Katherine blinked. The same old Anne. Always wishes the attention was on her.

"I can't wait to hear it all!" Katherine lied.

"Oh, Kat," Anne laughed thrusting her coat in Katherine's arms and disappearing off to the living room.

Katherine rolled her eyes and hung Anne's coat up on the peg.

Anne Dolan was an old school friend of Katherine's. They had lost contact for a few years but they happened to bump into each other at the local supermarket a few months ago. Now Katherine regrets going to that supermarket that day.

"A glass of wine?" Katherine offered.

"Oh, go on then," Anne replied holding out a glass she had managed to find. Just as Katherine had finished pouring the wine, there was another knock at the door.

"Philip!" Katherine grinned at her brother-in-law.

"Good Evening, little sister-in-law," he smiled and reached down to hug her. He unwrapped a bottle of wine.

"I brought wine..." he laughed.

"You'd better come in then!"

Philip followed Katherine into the living room. She introduced Philip to Anne who was staring nosily through a photo album.

Katherine's sister had died a few months back and Philip had been heartbroken. He and Katherine had decided to remain friends though. He frequently visited her to check everything was all in hand.

"Pour yourself some wine, Phil," Katherine told him as there was yet another knock at the door.

Elizabeth stood on the porch clasping a glass bowl containing a delicious pie.

"Come on in, Elizabeth," Katherine invited her dear friend in to join the other two.

"Anne, Philip, this is my neighbour, Elizabeth. She lives just opposite," Katherine said.

Philip held out his hand.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, ma'am."

Elizabeth waved him away.

"Please, call me Elizabeth."

Philip nodded and offered her a seat.

There was another knock at the door.

"Golly, Katherine, how many people are you expecting?" Anne asked.

"This is the last one."

A dark man stood on the other side of the door dressed in a business suit. He smiled as Katherine opened the door.

Andrew Cameron was her husband's solicitor who had become a great friend of their's. The three of them regularly had dinner together.

"Good Evening, Andrew. Please come through," she directed him to the living room.

Katherine retreated to the kitchen to prepare the dinner. She smiled as she listened to her guests laugh together.

'This is going to be a delightful evening,' she thought to herself.

How wrong she was.
