Chapter 1

I'm Rhyder Lee, turning 18 in around 8 months time. I would describe myself as a relatively shy individual and my past experiences would just tell me that too.

I never had the interest in girls, no no don't get me wrong, I'm not gay or anything. It's just that it never felt right, I've kissed a few but there wasn't one that I could connect with or I could imagine spending my life with.

Honestly, I'm afraid of the day I fall in love with someone. It gives her so much right over me, she conquers my heart and soul and then we become one. It's scary that things happen so fast and time doesn't wait.

It's the commitment that daunts me the most, I give her my everything and she makes that faithful decision to throw it away and I'm crushed. I've never really given —any of the girls I have dated— my heart, it never felt right at all.

I seem like a really plucky person but I'm not, my friends describe me as bold, stout-hearted and even unabashed.

I do feel embarrassed but I hardly express it through my facial and physical expressions. There are even I times I feel nervous and scared but at the advantage of my height it's easy to conceal it.

We were at basket ball practice and Damon -as usual- pretended to sprain his ankle so he could slack off and coach would always get me to bring him to the nurse's office.

I always comply and bring him to the office because the relationship and the bond we share is different from the other boys.

Mon and I have been friends for 13 years now.

From kindergarten, middle school and to high school.

In fact, our parents are good friends too! If there was an event in ours or Mon's house, invitation is just a gesture.

But then again, I sometimes don't understand the way his mind works and the way he gets himself out of fixes.

I don't get how he manages to be captain and slack off at the same time.

"Bro, you got to stop this!" I punched his arm lightly.

"why, we get to walk pass the girl's gym and see those hot asses." Damon reasoned.

I just gave him the I-can't-be-bothered-stare and continued walking, I was least interested with those "Pom Pom" girls.

We reached the nurse's office and she just rolled her eyes at the sight of Damon grabbing his ankle and wrote off a medical certificate for him.

Damon came to the office far too often with million of excuses and this time he has been using the same one for the whole week, she got tired of attending to him. Anyone would!

She shoved the medical certificate into his arm and chased us out.

"Well, that was easy." announced Damon.

I rolled my eyes.

"Gives us more time to see those pretty legs and ass." Damon grinned widely.

I just could not help but punch him again, he just shrugged it off and continued staring at the cheerleaders.

15mins later, we went back to basketball practice. Coach mentioned something about an outdoor adventure camp called Serving Outdoors Brilliantly Camp (SOBC) for student leaders and I could tell Damon was least interested in it.

After all, when asked how he got to be captain, he would just say luck.

Our school, North high, was located like in the middle of no where, it was pretty hard to catch a bus or a train and so Damon usually gives me and our clique a ride home.

Today we decided to stop by his house instead and play a couple of video games, I was thinking about the Anime Festival that was coming up in November and decided to search up on some characters.

"Oh come on Ray, don't be a bore. come play with us!" Aiden whined.

"Yeah, you could do ur research another time!" Damon rolled his eyes.

"The festival is like in 9 months and I'm sure you'll have plenty of time to plan." Noel added, stuffing himself with a handful of chips.

"Agh fine, just one round!" I unwillingly grabbed the glacier white wireless controller from the coffee table and sat in front the screen.

We played till quite late and by the time I got home it was 9pm.

"Hey, the food's in the fridge, reheat it if you're hungry. -Mom" read the note on the dining table.

I was too tired to do so and so I just grabbed a ready-made peanut butter bun and sat on the kitchen counter, planing my next day.

                               •••

I got up relatively early for a Saturday morning and decided to go to a nearby café.

I kicked myself to the bathroom and switched on the icy cold water. I put on black basketball shorts, black muscle tee, a black baseball cap and black sneakers.

I walked into the café and went straight to the counter and I must say that barista that attended to me was a freaking bitch obsessing over me, I couldn't stand her attitude but I still ordered my Mocha Latte without showing her my attitude.

I turned around and damn I saw the most beautiful girl alive.

Her hair was inky-black and it was tied up in a messy but cute bun right above her head. She was wearing a black long dress and I totally thought we matched in outfit. She had long but pink lips. She also totally seemed engrossed in her work.

Faster than I thought, I typed "there is a hot girl in the café." to my clique's group chat.

Unknowingly, I was smiling to myself.

The response was crazy, demanding me to take a picture of her but I refused to.

So much persuasion forced me to comply to their wishes as I walked slowly to my sit, I sticked out my phone hoping to catch a perfect image; angling my phones in all sorts of ways and as I slowly reached her...I realized, she was too!

My reflex action was to quickly place my phone onto the table and when her gaze didn't move from it, I shoved it in my pocket.

An innocent smiled hit her face and I fell in love with her there and then.
