Chapter Twelve:
"I can't leave her, or Mike. It's too dangerous here, I have to keep them safe."
"Don't you think it's safer for them to stay away from you?" he asked me curiously.
"Probably, but I can't leave them here, they'll come back, Wayne said so himself." I answered him.
I fell into a deep sleep and woke up at exactly six a.m. I hurried up and packed my things, one bag, I convinced myself. I ran from the bathroom to the guest bedroom with my toothbrush in my mouth to wake John, he moaned as I shook him by his shoulders but it seemed to work. We were ready in fifteen minutes, I ran across the street as John reversed the SUV out of the garage, he was waiting right outside the house with the car idling as I went inside.
Upstairs I followed the hall filled with family photos to Valerie's room, I opened the door slowly and peeked inside. She was sitting on her bed with Mike next to her, she looked around at me and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
"You've already packed?" I asked as I looked at the two large black traveling suitcases next to the bed.
"Yeah, I saw you packing this morning. I hope you didn't come to say goodbye."
"I came to get you two." she smiled and stood up to greet me with a hug and a soft kiss.
A smile hasn't come across Mike's lips since he came back, he was miserable, I wonder what they did to him...
John helped loading the bags into the car, he greeted Mike but didn't get a response, the drive away from home was horrible. We passed our neighbors, the supermarket and the school on our way out of town. We all looked away as we drove past the police van that was on its way to find us, John had to act normal to ensure he wasn't recognized. His sigh of relief when the officer was gone told me just how close our encounter was.
We drove and drove for miles until we were so far gone I didn't recognize our surroundings, John pulled over and killed the ignition, he pressed a button that unlocked all the doors.
"I have to stretch my legs a bit, you coming with me?" he asked, I opened my door and got out.
The fresh air was soothing, I looked into the window and saw Valerie sleeping on Mike's shoulder, he gave me a nod and John pressed the alarm button, locking the doors.
"Where are we?" I asked him as we walked into a corn field.
"I have no idea." he said as he laughed, I smiled knowing we were completely lost.
We walked for a minute or so, following a dirt path, it lead to an old wooden cabin far away. We reached some barbed wire fencing that encircled the place.
"Are we on a farm?" I asked John.
"I think so, it looks spooky, I hope they have a toilet in that cabin, I have to pee." He said as he laughed.
I just shook my head and laughed with him, we scaled the fence and walked towards the cabin. I walked towards the small window, trying to look through it to see if someone was living inside this old place, I did see someone, I saw John. He smiled at me from inside and yelled at me to come in, waving his arm at me.
"You can't just go inside, what if someone was in here?" I asked him loudly, he just shrugged his shoulders and gave me an I-don't-care look.
A thick layer of dust covered every piece of furniture in the cabin, proving that nobody was living there for a while. I opened a cabinet and found glass bottles filled with different species of fetuses, ranging from crocodile to horse. I smacked it shut as I laid eyes on the human fetus, I didn't want John to see it.
