"What are we supposed to do now?" Xavier heaved, frustration laced in his tone. He had just returned from his daily visit to Irina's room and nothing had changed. She was still mute and refused to eat, sleep or bathe. She hadn't even acknowledged him when he entered the room. She just continued dazing off. The older boy was seriously beginning to worry over her and it seemed like he was the only one doing so.
He and his friends were outside by a stream they often went to for fresh water. They didn't have indoor plumbing like those in Elysium did, so their water supply came straight from the streams and waterfalls throughout their land. Fortunately for them, there were quite a few bodies of water around for them to use as they pleased. "I don't know." Kaleb shrugged carelessly. "I got her back. That was all I had to do." He was lying on the forest floor, his hands locked behind his head as he looked up at the open sky hovering above him.
"Wow, I didn't realize how much of a douchebag you could be towards the girl you like," Peter scoffed audaciously, rolling his eyes right after he finished his statement.
"What?" Kaleb shot up from his reclined position and glared at the deer-eyed male. "Did you just say I liked that stupid girl?" he questioned, irked.
"No," Marcus cut in curtly, aiding his twin brother. "To be more accurate, Peter said you were a douchebag towards the girl you like."
"But Kaleb's always a douchebag period," Peter remarked from his position on a large boulder.
"We're all douchebags, you fucking moron. You being the biggest one for making such an outrageous claim," Kaleb barked and sucked his teeth. "You don't know what the hell you're talking about, Peter. I do not, and I repeat do not, have feelings for that girl. Ever since she's arrived, she's been nothing but trouble. If I could kill her, I would," he huffed haughtily.
"So why don't you?" Xavier challenged. He wasn't oblivious or dense. He could tell Kaleb was only bluffing. "You could kill her if you wanted to. You know nobody would stop you. It'd be easy as well since you live with her and with the condition she's in, one slash to the throat would put an end to it all. Sure, your father would be upset with you but he'd get over it. And so what if he doesn't? It's not like you give a shit about what he thinks or feels anyways."
It was eerily quiet as Kaleb glowered at Xavier. He wanted to rip his tongue out, beat him to bloody pulp. However, Kaleb wasn't really mad at Xavier because he did have a point. He was mad at himself. He was mad because Xavier was right. He could kill Irina in less than ten seconds. Put her out of her misery and rid himself of all the trouble he claimed she brought. Yet, he hadn't. He kept telling himself it was because his father wanted her to live but the boy never really cared about Gideon's opinion. He wasn't the type to just start randomly either. So there had to be another reason as to why he couldn't kill her.
No, Kaleb didn't love her.
He didn't even know what love was.
Hell, he didn't even like her!
At least not in the way his friend was implying he did.
His heart never fluttered when he thought about her.
