Misha wouldn't leave her alone. They sat in a canteen. It was late in the evening and they had decided to stop by a coffee shop after college.Misha's mom was hosting a birthday party for her husband, and had given Misha a couple of invitations to invite her friends with.
Misha had asked Pia to come along. She was insistent about it.
Pia hadn't been to a birthday party before. Sure, they celebrated birthdays at the orphanage, but on a smaller scale. A few of her friends and some kids attended. That's it.
Misha belonged to one of the richest families in town. Their parties were probably spectacular. She was sure that this one was going to be ginormous, because all of the student were talking about it today in the hallway.
After her momma died, Pia didn't feel like partying and, plus, she didn't own a dress fit for parties.
However, Misha wouldn't listen. She was as stubborn as always.
"Pia, please you must come. Or else, or else..." She paused to think of some threats which would make Pia attend the party.
"Or else what...? What punishment are you going to give me, miss Dobriyal?" Pia asked playfully.
"I'm going to stop talking to you forever. Yeah, that's it! I'll take an oath that, if you don't come to the party ,I'll never talk to you again." Misha looked pretty serious. It was funny how much Misha got so worked up about it.
Pia didn't want to hurt her only best friend, so she finally gave in to Misha's pleas -- but only on one condition...
"You have to obtain permission from the hostel matron. She's rather strict. Or you could get your mom to call her. I'm guessing the party will go on until late in the night, and if I miss the curfew, she'll dismiss me for sure. I can't afford to be on her bad side."
"That won't be a problem. I'll cook something fishy. Don't you worry about that." Misha was grinning from ear-to-ear.
Then she looked behind Pia and said in a high pitched voice, "Kabir here is going on a date with his good-for-nothing girlfriend."
Pia looked behind her in confusion. She saw Kabir heading towards them with T trailing behind him. By the looks of it, both of them had heard what Misha has said.
Misha continued without sparing a breath, "By the way! Kabir, guess who has finally agreed to come to the party? Pia! Isn't it awesome? Oh, I almost forgot: You won't be there, right? Because you have a date." Said Misha, suggesting something to Kabir.
Pia didn't know why Misha was making a big deal out of it. She was sure her face was beet-red by now.
"Who told you I am not going? I just bumped into T on the way here. I am not going on a date with her. Seriously Misha, stop assuming things. Anyway! I might as well attend the party. There's nothing else to do and now that Pi..." He stopped abruptly because Misha bent over and started to laugh hysterically. Pia had no idea what was going on. Misha was laughing, Kabir looked embarrassed, and T appeared to be constipated .
After composing herself, Misha turned towards T. "Consider yourself uninvited." She then playfully hit Kabir in his shoulder and said, "Dude! You just make sure that you come over early. Mom can use an extra hand for serving. Pia, come on, let's give you the best experience of your life."
Before leaving, she said to Kabir, "Don't, dude just don't."
They both hopped on Misha's motorbike. Yes, Misha has a motorbike.
Once they were a fair distance away, she asked Misha whats going on.
"Actually, Pia, Kabir is my best friend like a big brother to me, but there is something I don't like about him. He is an infamous player. He changes girlfriends every week. In fact, he's been with T a couple of times now. You're my best friend too, but you're too innocent. He's taken a liking to you, and I don't want you to be his flavor of the week. I don't want you to get hurt, because if you do, I'm sure I'll lose one of you."
