"What did you do? Were you the one that attacked Regan last night? Almost killed her and her baby?" he asked angrily. He stopped by their usual place, exactly where Stranger said he'd be.
"That's none of your concern. Your only concern is getting your money when you've completed the job I've paid you to do." Stranger replied. They were in a park, sitting on a bench watching people pass by.
"Why are you doing this? Regan hasn't done anything to me, or to you." He said remorseful. He had never regretted using Regan to get the money that he needed, he had never regretted it, until last night, when he saw the air leaving her lungs, when he saw her struggling to breathe. He knew then, that Regan was in trouble because he'd messed up. And now he was going to fix it, however he could.
"Dr. Roberts, why I am going after Regan is truly none of your concern. Quite honestly, she's just collateral damage. And if you think, you can worm your way out of the hole you've dug yourself in, you're mistaken. Don't forget that you owe a lot of money, and the only reason no one has come after you is because of me. If you're not careful, I can make that change very quickly." Dr. Roberts' face, drained of color, Stranger was threatening him, backing him into a corner.
"You promised you would help me." He said weakly.
"I am helping you, I'm giving you the money that you owe. Now, are you going to continue to keep an eye on her for me? Or am I going to have to make a call?" Stranger said clearly. He looked at Dr. Roberts with malice and hatred in his eyes. He couldn't stand weakness, especially from someone as pathetic as Mark Roberts.
Mark was pathetic, he thought he could reason with Him, try to get Him to change His mind about going after Regan, he was wrong.
"Yes, I will do what you say." He stammered.
"Good boy. I'll call you soon with further instructions. And Mark?" Mark looked up as soon as Stranger called his name.
"Don't make me regret this, or you will be sorry." He said evenly. Mark nodded in silence. Stranger got up and walked away, leaving Mark to his silent reverie.
...
I felt my eyes flutter slightly, but because my lids felt groggy, I had a hard time opening my eyes. Finally, I managed to wake myself up and the first thing I saw was a uniformed police officer in the corner? Was that right? No it couldn't be; my eyes were playing tricks on me. I coughed slightly to get the words that were in my throat out.
"Ex..excuse me officer? Is everything alright?" I asked softly, my throat hurt, in fact, now that I thought about it. My whole body was aching? What the hell was going on?
"Ma'am, I'll wait on the doctor to come and explain everything to you."
I started to sit up as soon as he said that to me. In that next moment, Mark walked in, he had a solemn expression on his face.
"Mark? What's going on? Why is that officer here?" I asked him, I felt my body start to panic. I levelled my breathing so as not to alarm my Peanut.
"Regan, last night, you had a stranger come into your room who tried to poison you and the baby with a lethal dose of Penicillin."
I looked at him with a horrified expression on my face.
"Is, is my baby okay?" I asked, I almost didn't want to know the answer, I don't know what I'd do if something happened to Peanut.
"We've taken some preliminary tests on the baby, and everything seems to be okay so far. I have to be honest with you Regan, even though the tests we've taken have been conclusive that everything is alright, there is still a slight chance that when your child is born, there could be developmental delays. The baby was deprived of oxygen for a few minutes, as soon as you started seizing. So even though on paper, the baby is okay, that might not be the case when he or she is born." He said professionally. I began to cry silent tears. Who would want to harm an innocent? My child was the most innocent of us all. Who would do this to us? To Peanut?
