"Mum i love you but you know i have loads of work to be done.. i can't just leave them to be just so that i can come back and meet you guys. Its just too much. Plus let me live a little i've been here for half a year and i didn't have the chance to explore California like i wanted" i said to my mum through the phone, biting my lower lip and hoping that she'll take the bait.

"Marrie Anne you're 24 and its time to settle down" my mother's stern voice boomed through the speaker of my phone.

"Mum how am i supposed to settle down? Im finally acheiving my dreams of studying Masters in LA" i smiled to myself. "Besides who knows if i can ever get the chance to work here as a director in Hollywood. Mum can you imagine your child's name on the big screen oh my dear god." I try to change the subject.

"Mare please dont do this to me. You know i love you and i would be so happy if that happens. But your family needs you here with us. Can't you just be a director here instead. You know what? What's important now is that you come back to Malaysia so that we can discuss more about your future in person." Her voice sounded calm at first annnnd back to stern at the end.

She started to talk more and more so i put her on mute and i heard a knock on my door. I opened it to reveal none other than my best friend aka Ethan Dolan. He walked in and looked at my bored face and mouths "check up call from mum again?" And me nodding my head. He smiled cheekily at me and sat down at the sofa in my rented apartment.

I opened the loudspeaker to my phone and it still didnt surprised me at the fact that my mum is still talking and ranting about me not being there with the whole family.

I know im a bad child for doing this but let me tell you that i have gone through this every single day. My mum would call me at 10:00 am sharp and ethan would usually arrive at my house around 10:30 am and my mum would still be talking to me on the phone. Phone calls usually end at 11:15 am with her saying the same word every single time which is 'i dont care how but you will come back'

I look at the clock and its just 10:47 am so i decided to pour some hot chocolate for myself. I looked at ethan who was now sitting at the end of the table looking bored and waiting for his time to talk to me. I sip on my drink and when i thought i wasnt listening to my mother. I swear to god i heard her saying "And oh Marrie! I met this one boy from your old school and i think he might still be interested in you so i decided that maybe you could get it off with him since you are single right?"

I accidently choked on my hot chocolate and ethan quickly came to the rescue and take the mug away.

"Um marrie? Are you still there? Marrie im asking you a question!"

I looked at the phone in disbelieve. My brain saying "WTF MUM NO NO NO NO IM FINE ALONE" but then i quickly unmute the phone and answered her telling im still listening.

"So what do you think?" She asked.

"Um mum i dont think that would be a great idea. I'--"

"If you disagree then im hoping you'll atleast tell me that you have a boyfriend now. Marrie, your dad and i arent getting any younger. We're almost 61, all i ask for is to see all my children get married before i die. Please marrie."

"Okay."

"Okay what? You'll try and meet up with the boy?" Her voice sounded cheer-y for some reason.

During that time ethan glared at me in disbelieve mouthing 'what' and me saying 'sorry'

Right before i was about to say yes ethan opened his mouth and said the words i swore i never thought he would say "HEEEEY BABE ARE YOU TALKING TO YOUR MUM" loud enough so that my mother could listen.

I looked at him surprised and mouth "WTF ARE YOU DOIN" and him looking at me and  saying "just go with it".

"Who's that? Marrie? Why do i hear a boys voice? Omg do you have a boyfriend, child? If yes then THIS IS GREAT NEWS."

I gave a deathly glare at ethan who looked confident with his actions a few seconds ago and now looking a bit scared.

"Um yeah actually i was meaning to tell you that i actually have someone already and that meeting the boy would be unnecessary." I explained in one breath.

"MARE THIS IS EXCITING OMG YOU HAVE TO BRING HIM BACK TO MEET US YOU JUST HAVE TO"

I looked at the clock and its 11:13 am.

"Anyhow i have to rush now, say hello to.. um.. whats his name?"

"Ethan.. Ethan dolan" i said while staring at him and balling my fist.
