"Oh, come on Mabel, don't be such a wimp." Shouted my brother Dipper from the opposite side of the river. I crossed my arms and glared at him.
"I'll have you know that nearly 60 percent of rivers in Oregon have-"
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just come over here already. Unless..." He leaned towards me and narrowed his eyes, his lips forming a smile. "Your not scared, are you?" I gulped and looked at the rushing river. Dipper laughed and leaned back. "Scaredy cat, scaredy cat!" He shouted into the forest, doing a strange dance and tripping over a large rock behind him.
"I'm not scared, it's called being cautious!" I called across the river, but my brother payed me no attention as he picked himself up and examined the rock he had fallen over.
"There's something very weird with this rock." He gasped and looked up at me. "Maybe it's a troll. I bet trolls like stickers." He laughed as pulled a pallet of stickers from his pocket, placing a thumbs up on the top of the rock. "There."
"Oh yes, now at least the rock is happy." I scoffed and uncrossed my arms, only to cross them a moment later.
"Oh, your just grumpy cause your scared of rivers." Dipper said matter of factly, placing more and more stickers on the rock. He then looked at the rock and smiled. "I think I'll name him Steve." Steve the rock showed no indication that he had heard his name, rightfully so.
"Well I'm sorry if I'm the only on here who understands the dangers of rivers!" I stuck up my nose and turned in the opposite direction of my brother, and his rock I suppose.
"Mabel, come on. You know I didn't mean it like that!" My brother called across the river but I kept walking along, paying no mind to the fact that, as I walked, the trees grew closer together and the terrain became jagged and unpredictable. Eventually, I came to a stop and looked around. I was in completely new territory. The wind picked up its pace and the smell of leaves wafted around me. I leaned against a tree and sighed, bumping my head against the tree.
"Ow." I turned around and rubbed the back of my head. I looked at the tree and brushed off the dust, finding perculier outlines in the shape of a rectangle on the side. With a grunt, I dug my nails through the crack and pulled. The door opened up, revealing a small alcove with a small machine, two slim levers sticking out of the top. Me being the curious person that I am, flipped all the levers and studied the machine. I quickly jumped as a rumbling sound arose and a square of floor opened behind me. With a squeal of excitement, I peeked inside the little alcove and found a book. It was a red book with a golden hand on the front and the number three drawn on the hand. I quickly blew the dust off and picked it up, fingering the tears and the seams. I opened the book and examined the pages. The words were legible, thank goodness, but the corners of the pages were worn, as if much time has been spent flipping through the pages. As I looked closer at the pages, I noticed that the content of the book was quite perculier but before I could look closed I heard a rustle in the bush behind me. I jumped and hid the book behind my back as my brother peered out from behind the bushes.
"Whatcha got there sis?" Dipper jumped from the bush and tried to look at the book.
"What are you talking about? I-I've got nothing!" I stuttered, tripping back and keeping the book against my back.
"Oh come on, I'm not that much of a dumb dumb." Dipper laughed and smiled at me. I sighed and clutched the book to my chest.
"Ok, but not here." I looked at him and couldn't help but smile. This book could be the summer adventure that we had been looking for.
