1:
The first time I saw her, I was in denial.
I walked into class a couple minutes early, since the door was open and I was tired of waiting in the hall. I saw her sitting at her desk, rearranging papers that already looked like they had been rearranged a million times that morning, as if she was nervous. She looked up, noticing my presence, and smiled, revealing deep dimples on an otherwise smooth face. “Hi, I’m Ms. Brown,” she frowned, “though I guess your timetable would say that, huh?”
I smiled at her nervousness. It must be her first day. “Ashley,” I said, giving her my best smile. You’re only smiling like that because she’s nervous, and you’re trying to seem friendly, I told myself, there’s no other reason behind that charming smile.
“You can just take a seat wherever, I don’t have a seating plan made up yet.”
I walked to a random desk at the back of the room, and put my things on the desk. Great, now I’m going to be sitting here for five minutes doing nothing. Smart move, Ash. I pulled out my phone, and started texting random people, trying to pass the time. She must think I’m a loser; I’m literally here by myself, and no one just walks into class by themselves. I have friends; they’re just not in this class.
Suddenly, I noticed her presence right in front of my desk. She’s even more beautiful close up. Wait no, she’s not beautiful, she’s just pretty, just an average looking woman. Nothing more. She smoothly took the phone out of my hands. “No phones are allowed in class, Miss Moore.” How does she know my last name? Oh, she probably looked it up on the class list.
“But-” I tried to protest.
She smiled again, which was a bit weird, until she explained. “No, I’m kidding, I just wanted to practice that, I’m sure I’ll have to do that a lot these next few months. Gosh, can you tell I’m new?” She handed my phone back, tucking her long blonde hair behind her ear, and for the first time I was able to tell who she actually was under the layer of nervousness.
“Hmm? No, it’s not obvious, just um, try to leave those poor papers alone, they already look like they’ve been shuffled around enough,” I smiled wide, and that seemed to break down some more of her nervousness.
“I’m sensing a hint of sarcasm. Remember, no rule breaking, which includes disrespecting your teacher, or I just may need to punish you on the first day.” She smiled again, but this time there was something behind the smile, maybe the twinkle in her dark brown eyes, that made me rethink her sentence.
‘Punish you’, does she mean? No, she can’t.
“I shall try my best,” I said, giving her a mock salute.
“You seem like the sarcastic type. I’m onto you, Moore,” she said, and walked away just as the bell rang.
Soon, the class started filling in, most of the seats being taken. A cute guy with black hair and ice blue eyes sat beside me. Okay, so he was more than cute, he was sexy; he had his hair short, with just enough around his face that he could flip it away. When he smiled at me, I could see his straight, white teeth.
“Hi, I’m-“
“Okay, looks like we can get started now,” Ms. Brown said, giving a brief look in our direction. She handed out a sheet, ‘An Introduction to Grade 12 English’, and read through it, telling us the basic rules of the class. Every time she smiled at me, I felt my heart beat just a little bit faster.
About half way through the introduction, a note landed on my desk.
‘Hi, I’m James:)’
‘I’m Ashley’ I send back.
