I wish I was a human. Life would have been much easier for me then.

I am waiting at the grocery store to buy everything that my mom told me to. I look around and see all the other fairies moving and carrying themselves gracefully. I am certainly a misfit in this world.

They all look beautiful. Something about them which makes them look like fairies. I look down at myself. I look so ordinary. I sigh, picking up the bags start moving home.

On my way back home, I think how all the fairies always say that they knew they were meant to be fairies. Somehow I have never felt that way.

My mother and father are not too fond of me. When I was born, they were really hopeful about the kind of powers I would posses. Every fairy has all the magical powers along with a special magical power of hers.

My mother and father had been truly disappointed to find out that not only I did not have a power of my own but some of the fundamental powers were also missing.

My mother and father knew how fairies like me were treated, so my lack of powers always had to be kept a secret from everybody.

Our kingdom's king and queen also thought it was some kind of crime to lack powers and hence executed those fairies. We, the fairies, who are responsible for doing good to the humans, how could we be so ruthless to our own kingdom?

All this made no sense to me. But I was never in a position to raise my voice against any of this, as my very existence was a ' threat ' to the kingdom and caused so much trouble to my ' normal ' parents.

I knock and stand in front of the door of my house. I hear noises coming from inside. My parents never fought, but today they had to. They had to make the decision today because tomorrow was the most important day of each faerie's life.

My brother opens the door. He has been the only person who has supported me through all of this. He engulfs me in a tight hug as soon as I enter the house. "Everything's going to be okay." he whispers in my ear and starts walking in the direction of the noises.

I decide not to follow him. I know what all this is going to be about. The placement ceremony.

The ceremony takes place every year and is not a big deal. Every person when turns sixteen, has to attend a ball and a dinner with their parents where they assign you the work you will be doing for the doing for the rest of your lives.

Of course, directly interacting with humans is a privilege and is only given to us after we become ready and trustworthy enough to do so. There is no way humans can know about our existence, although they have their own fantasies.

But every few years, when the prince, becomes eligible to get married, a choosing ceremony takes place along with the placement ceremony. This year Prince Drake would be choosing his wife.

All the girls are really excited for this and would do anything and everything to get noticed by the prince. And here all I want is to be eaten up by some animal right now so that he won't notice me. Anyways my chances of getting noticed are very low as I am not a beautiful, graceful fairy but a clumsy and a shy one. And with my ordinary clothes and no make up I am quite sure I would not get noticed.

When I am just about to fall asleep, my mother enters my bedroom. "Hello mother" I say quietly, getting up. She smiles at me and sits at the edge of my bed.

She places her hand on my head and kisses my forehead. I smile, a little surprised, this kind of affection being entirely new to me.

"Darling, I know tomorrow is a very important day for you. And as far as I know you, I know you would do everything so that you don't get noticed. But let me tell you one thing darling, this is one of the days that you would remember for the rest of your lives. And I want it to be special for you." she says raising her hand up in the air. She points her finger towards a wall and starts dragging it down, lot of sparkle getting formed in its way. "This was the dress that I wore to the choosing ceremony, and I want you to wear this. You would wouldn't you?" she looks at me expectantly.

Behind her I see a the shape of a dress getting formed. It is a strapless light blue color dress with delicate flower designs made of silver on it.

I gasp. Its beautiful. "But mother I-"

"No ifs and buts honey. You can do this much for me right?" she says placing her hand on mind, and as soon as she does that, I am hit with all the pain and disappointment she felt when I was born.

I pull my hand from beneath hers immediately. I know why she did that to me, why she brought back all those memories. " Okay. I will do it. For you." I say, looking down at my hand and slightly rubbing it.

I pick up the dress and place it in my cupboard. I sigh. What did my parents want? Trouble for me? For themselves?

I hear a knock and turn around to look at my brother. He smiles and sits down on my bed. He pats the spot beside him.

I sit next to him, placing my head on his shoulder. He is the only family I have got.

"Everything is going to be alright Cassy."

"No. I know it can never be, the way I am would always - "

"Don't ever say that again. You don't know what you are talking about. Don't let anyone ever get to you."

"But I don't have all the powers. It means I was never supposed to be a fairy."

"Really? That is all you think fairies are? Someone with magic? Well, then my little sister you don't what real fairies are. They are the ones with a kind heart. They are the ones who have the magnanimity to let go. To forgive. To love and spread love unconditionally. You don't need magic when you have all of that, which is why I know Cassy, know that you are a real fairy. You are not someone like our parents who just cares about your reputation and is not kind enough to accept and love their daughter the way she is."

I lift my head up and smile at him. He had everything. He was like one of the normal people in our kingdom. He could have been like my parents. But here he was. Supporting me. Accepting me the way I was.

He chuckles and ruffles my hair. I am sure he learnt that from the humans he's been monitoring. I try to stop him but he end's up tickling me and I end up laughing out very loud and unfairy like.

We spend sometime talking and looking out of my window at the stars. We feel closer to them compared to humans considering the fact that we live on clouds.

Sometime later he tells me to sleep, tomorrow being an important day. I don't know when I fall asleep but the last thing is I remember is my brother's happy face and my house and wish that everything remains the way it is.

Let tomorrow not change my world.
