What is success? Is it expensive sports cars? A three-story house in the hills? The latest fashions? Sadly, our culture-as seen in movies, songs, and TV ads- sometimes seems to say yes. However, I believe that success comes from personal achievement, we sometimes confuse the two.
The messages society sends might be subtle, but we hear them and see them constantly: Own these products, dress this way, or live like this people, and you will be successful. However, there is a problem with that message; wealth and the "things" you can buy with it do not actually make you a success. In my opinion, some of the wealthiest people are not very successful. Although they might meet our culture's superficial definition of success, I think it is important to ask what they have achieved at what have they succeeded? You have to look beyond the cars, the clothes, and the lifestyles and to the person within.
To me, real success is not necessarily about having wealth, accumulating the most stuff, or even being the very best. Success can be smaller and more personal. Author Orison Swett Marden said that "success is not measured by what you accomplish, but by the opposition you have encountered, and the odds". That is, it is about people overcoming obstacles and striving to achieve something meaningful. It is the athlete who works out everyday or the student who studies at night to earn a degree or the mother who works hard to take care of her family.
Success has the power to make person feel proud and fulfilled in a way that wealth on its own cannot. Take, for example, my Aunt
