I, Lana McAllister was watching the news that morning, my parents had left California that morning for their flight to Paris for their annual fashion line debut. I was half asleep while listening on about military this, government that, but then something caught my attention ,a drone like voice came from the tv.
"I repeat again. Plane 749 of Circa Airlines has crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, there were no survivors." The blonde woman's face disappeared from the screen as a video clip taken from a helicopter appeared on screen showing chunks of metal slowly sinking into the depths of the ocean, fire flickering on chunks not yet submerged.
I turned around to look at my sister who was sitting at the table, her spoon halfway to her mouth, eyes widened as she starred back at me. She dropped her spoon and we both ran to the kitchen counter where out parents flight schedule laid. It read 'Circa - 749.' My sister held onto the edge of the counter, her face pale.
Our parents were dead. I slide down to the floor, my vision blurring as tears ran down my cheeks. It was just three hours ago since we had last seen our parents and now they were gone. Cadence slid down next to me, wrapping her arms around me then leaning her head down on my shoulder, beginning to sob as well, her body shaking as she did.
"Lana, are they really gone?" She sobbed into my shoulder.
"I think... I think so Cadence." I barely go my words out, my chest heaving so hard.
We fell asleep there, on the kitchen floor, leaning on each other for support. The phone was what shook us from our short slumber. The obnoxious ringed kept going, and going, and going, until it finally went to voice mail. She system took it and then there was my Aunt's sad voice on the speaker.
"Hi girls," Her voice was shaky and she took a short pause. "Please call me as soon as you -" I jumped up and grabbed the phone.
"Auntie Kassie?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper?
"Oh dear girl I was worried about you two! How are you girls? I have someone coming to pick you girls up and drive you up to live with us in South Dakota." She must have known we wouldn't fly.
Aunt Kassie and Uncle Luke were the only relatives we had now that our parents were gone. "Oh Aunt Kassie, its terrible." My voice shook and I let out a sob.
"Its alright, you girls pack up. I have a chauffeur waiting to pick you up around 6 alright?"
I nodded my head and then realized she couldn't see me. "Yes, okay." I responded, taking the phone away from my ear and hanging it up.
Cadence looked at me and I noticed she had stood up and walked over next to me. "I guess we better get packing." She mumbled, turning her back to me and slowly walking to the hallway, most likely to begin packing.
I set the phone on the counter and followed her, digging our biggest suitcases out from the tiny closet, setting one down in her room and then taking the other with me to my room.
My suitcase couldn't hold really that much considering I was packing up my life, and maybe to never return. I shoved in as many things as I could; clothing, a few books I've never read and somethings with a lot of sentimental value, such as our family photo. I zipped up the overflowing suitcase and pulled it into the hallway next to my sister's doorway.
"Are you ready Cadence?" I asked her quietly, noticing that she sat on the edge of her bed staring at the brown walls. She nodded and I walked to her, hugging her close then grabbing her suitcase and setting it in the hallway next to mine.
"It's 5:30, If there's anything else you want to do I guess we better do it now." She sighed, wiping a stray tear from her face before nodding and laying back on the bed, which I did also, tired and stressed from the accident and all the pent up emotions we kept hidden.
We knew the house furniture would be covered in sheets when we got back, if we ever came back, and we knew none of our stuff would disappear, but that could only make things the tiniest bit better, if at all.
I've had always asked my parents when we would get to move to a smaller city. My sister and I loved small towns. We had visited my aunt and uncle once before, their house was beautiul. I wanted to live there. But not without my parents in my life. It wouldn definitely take some getting used to.
There was a honk from outside and when I looked out the window I saw a sleek black car, the trunk had just popped open and a man in a black suit got out of it.
"Let the journey begin." I said to no one in particular. My sister rolled off the bed then stood, grabbed her bags and headed to the door. I followed not far behind, pulling my overstuffed bag behind me.
The door was opened in front of us and the man in the suit held the door open for us to exit. I stopped on the front porch, and when the man and my sister headed towards the car I let the door shut and locked it, then turned and followed them to the car.
The man took my bag and put it in the trunk with my sisters and then he held the back drivers side door open for me to slide in next to my sister, then he opened his door and got into the car himself.
He finally spoke, "Good evening girls, I'm Jerry and I'll be driving you to South Dakota." His voice was warm and solemn. I took an instant liking to him, knowing that either was I would be in the same car with him for the day and a half trip ahead of us.
"Thank you Jerry," I said quietly, "I'm Lana, and my sister is Cadence."
He turned so he could look into the back of the car where we sat, a tight, knowing smile on his face. "Did you girls want to stop anywhere for food before we head out?"
My sister next to me shook her head, "Let's just get this over with." She muttered. Jerry nodded before turning around, letting the car eased forward and into traffic.
