"How was school?" Dad asked from the kitchen.
"It was okay, I guessed." I threw my book bag on the couch on top of Paige's.
"Why is Paige home?" I asked.
"Sandra County closed." He came out into the living room. "Cupcake?"
I laughed. Every since mom died he has tried his best to fit the motherly role. Last week, he painted my toenails. "Sure."
I leaped onto the couch turning the TV on. Channel 666- News. A women stood in an empty field, the wind blowing, yet behind her seemed calm. "This is Kara Lynn here, reporting from Washington. Sandra County Schools closed due to a strange rock falling onto the cafeteria. Two were injured, yet no one was severely hurt. I'm here with scientist Donn Hodge. Donn, what is this rock?"
Donn looked down at his hands and sighed, "this is proof of the universe reaching an ultimate temperature."
"Can you explain to us what that means?"
The TV flickered and Donn spoke, "the stars are falling."
"Wow. They are really trying to scare us, huh?" I asked to dad.
"It's kind of like 'The world is ending in December' thing all over again." He laughed and brought over a cupcake.
Donn bends over onto a table and the camera points to a massive jewel rock. Dark, yet elegant. "What we have here is a star. Yes, I know it isn't yellow 'nor is it glowing. This is a star when it dies. The universe has reached a degrees in which the stars freeze, causing their fire to burn out. Then they fall."
"Thank you for this, Donn. I am Kara Lynn and we will be right back."
"Elise?" Dad spoke, "maybe we should take caution?"
I stared at him, thinking, "like what?"
Screaming rung outside and I could hear something like glass breaking, "what the-"
Dad got up to open the door and his face showed something I've never seen before. I run behind him, I pushed him out of the way and stumbled into the yard. Before my eyes, stood a group of people trying to lift- to lift- a star. A large rock cratered our drive way and what seemed to be a child was under neath. "Dad." I whispered. I turned around to look at him, but he was already outside helping the neighbors. At the door, stood Paige holding her yellow blanket, "what's going on? I was sleeping."
I picked her up and brung her back inside.
