CHAPTER TWO PART 1
The pain was unbearable as Oscarius, straddled across my legs, carefully stitched the gash closed using the cloth he had collected and a needle. Sprawled out across the dirt, I screamed out in pain. I felt helpless, the puppeteer installing the strings on his marionette. It felt like I was laying there for hours, the intense pain moving steadily back and forth from left to right and back again. It was, in a way, soothing.
It was strange. Never would I have believed that pain could lull a person to sleep. A distant, faded voice told me otherwise. I strained to listen.
"There, all done. How does it feel lad?" I heard Oscarius say.
He was distant but I could make out what he said. Suddenly, I was ripped from my delirious state and a numb pain rolled across my entire body. My eyes opened to another pair looking right back into mine; I jumped slightly.
"Thank God you're alright" Oscarius breathed, relief in his voice. "Sorry to scare ya lad. You lost a lot of blood. I was scared we'd lost you." he said as I struggled to prop myself up on my elbows. He moved behind me and reappeared with a bucket of water. He held it to my lips as I drank the water.
I looked around the tent I was in, daylight peeking in from holes in the fabric above my head. The mats beneath my stomach offered little comfort, with rocks bulging through it. Needles, as well as blood-stained rags and now empty water buckets were strewn all about me. They were the only evidence I had of the previous night's surgery. After some struggling, I managed to sit up. I looked at Oscarius, who was seated across from me. He looked exhausted but relieved to see me moving around.
"Let's get you out of this tent and into the fresh air." he said to me, standing up again.
After some effort on both of our parts, I stepped out into the morning sunlight. I took a deep breath, my back felt tight. Better uncomfortable than unbearable I thought to myself.
