Chapter 3:

Lisa stayed up all night, watching Phoebe. She checked her pulse every now and then. Talking to Phoebe helped relieve at least a bit of the fear and loneliness she felt. Even though the other girl couldn't answer, it gave Lisa the comfort of knowing that there was another living , breathing human being on this island. When light broke, Lisa left the shelter to find something to wrap the bite and get rid of the poison. She checked the shore for possible remnants of a first aid kit, but there was nothing. Lisa sighed and walked back to the dense clearing. She decided to walk into the jungle behind the dense clearing. Coming up to the entrance, she gulped and took a couple steps forward. Knowing that she had to go in for her best friend, she took a deep breath and began searching the ground. After what felt like hours, she came across the plant she was looking for. While living at Phoebe's house, Lisa read a book about healing and edible plants. Grabbing the plant, she brought it back to their camping ground and placed it on one of the spare leaves. Talking a flat rock, she ground the plant up into pulp and spread it over the lead. She walked towards the shelter, ready to apply the herb to Phoebe's bite.

"Phoebe! I brought you some medicine, wake up." Lisa said as she poked her head through the entrance of the shelter.

Upon entering the shelter, she found it empty. Panic rose in the pit of her stomach as she ran our of the shelter, searching for her missing best friend. She began searching the sand for footprints. Lowering her head, she scanned the ground for any sand that was out of place. Footprints, drag marks or anything would be helpful at this point. After not finding anything, she didn't give up. Crouching down to get a closer look, she noticed a thin line of red substance that glistened in the sun. Dipping her finger in it, she smelled it and as soon as the metallic smell permeated her nostrils she knew immediately that it was blood. She looked at the thin line and noticed that it lead to a cave opening. Lisa took off running, following the trail. As she neared the cave entrance, she saw Phoebe laying on the ground.

"Phoebe! Oh my god! What happened? How did you end up here? I didn't see any drag marks. Who took you here? Where did the blood come from? Did someone carry you here? Did they hurt you?"

A cough from Phoebe interrupted Lisa and she knelt on the ground near her best friend. She saw a little stream of blood trickling from Phoebe's mouth. Phoebe slowly turned her head to face Lisa . She was pale as a sheet, black circles around her eyes and the blood on her chin made her look somewhat like a vampire. Masking her fear, Lisa tried to lighten the mood.

"Hey Pheebs, I didn't know you joined the cast of Twilight." Lisa joked.

Phoebe managed a weak smile.

"Wow, I must really look awful since I know how much you hate that book." She teased back.

Lisa managed a smile, but then her face grew serious.

"Pheebs, what happened?" She whispered.

Phoebe looked at her best friend and swallowed. She knew her reason for disappearing was going to hurt Lisa.

"Phoebe?"

Phoebe sighed and looked up at Lisa's face. She could see the worry that lined the creases in her frown.

"I-I knew I was dying. I didn't want to be a burden to you. You have a family to go back to, someone who loves you. My family probably wouldn't even notice I'm gone."

Her words hit Lisa like a slap in the face. Instantly, she launched into a lecture.

"How could you be so selfish? I thought you were dead! What were you thinking running off like that! How did you even get here? Phoebe, do you know how much you hurt me?"
