Fallen Memories - 9

“Come back,” Janie sobbed, “I miss you already!” I could picture her tear-stained face, all red and blotchy, wild blond curls bouncing. I fought back a smile, switching the phone to my other ear as I double-checked my bag one last time.

“It’s only for the weekend,” I reminded her.

“A lot can happen in a weekend.” The pout in her voice was unmistakable.

    “That’s true,” I said noncommittally.

“What if you mean some handsome, dashing man while you’re there, marry and never come back?” Jane wailed.

“That’s not going to happen, Jane. You’re getting yourself worked up over nothing! I’ll be back Sunday night, just in time for school.” I shifted the phone yet again, cradling it between my chin and shoulder as I hefted my bags up. “Besides, you’ve got Adam.”

    “Or so you say.”

“What do you mean?” A sliver of hope burrowed deep into the center of my heart.

She sighed. “I haven’t seen much of Adam this week.”

“Really? Where do you think he’s been?” In my mind, I added: With Sabrina. Where else?

“Truthfully, I can’t even begin to think of places he could’ve gone.”

“He’s been in school, hasn’t he?” I thought back, trying to remember if I’d seen Adam in Trig or World History. I knew that I didn’t have any other classes, but he shared one of the former two with myself and Jane.

“I...I don’t think so.”

Jane sounded as if she truly couldn’t remember. As far as I knew, she hadn’t partied since Monday night. Therefore, her memory should have been crystal clear. Perhaps she’d gotten herself worked up over her fight with Sabrina, and she feared losing Adam to her that Adam’s presence in Brunswick slipped her mind.

“Either way, the guy’s a creep.” There. It was out. It wasn’t the full of my feelings toward him, but at least Jane could start to see my side of things, too.

    Jane huffed. “That’s your opinion.”

“An opinion that I’m entitled to.”

“I disagree. He’s sweet, charming, and good-looking. Just give him a chance, Ivy. Please?”

“I’m not the one dating him, babe,” I said. “I think you should take a moment to really think about who Adam Letherby is.”

“He’s only rude to you because he can sense that you don’t like him!”

“Jane, I don’t dislike people for no reason. He’s rude to me because he knows I dislike him for a reason.”

“What’s the reason?” Jane’s voice shrank.

“I think you need to figure that one out on your own.”

I wasn’t trying to push Jane to look past Adam’s outer surface. In fact, I figured it was best if she didn’t know that he’s Nephilim. I only wanted her to see the darker side of him, to see that he was no good. The only one he was good for was Sabrina -- the two of them had a lot more in common than he and Jane did.

“You’ll be the death of me, Ivy.” She groaned into the phone, an obnoxiously loud sound.

“Hey, at least you’ll die thanking me,” I said, only partially joking.
