I turned off all my headlights as I pulled into the driveway as quietly as my old hummer would allow. My palms sweaty, I stepped out of the car and turned the door nob, expecting my mom to be in the living room ready to interrogate me. The coast was clear. I tip-toed up to my room and plopped down on the bed, sighing in relief. If I didn't believe in luck before I sure do now.
That morning, we all had a family breakfast for the first time in about two weeks. My dad was on a business trip to Cuba for some big corporate deal with his company and it was quite boring without him. He was just as cheerful as my mother, and, surprisingly the more lenient one. "So your mother told me you were late to come home yesterday. What was that all about," he said staring me down from the other end of the table. "Umm...I was out with some friends." "What friends," my mother snapped. The older man shot her a glance before looking back to me.
"Who, specifically," his tone was kind and understanding. "Just Brendon and a few of his friends." After a scoff from my mother, he tapped his fingers on the table for a moment, thinking. "Tell Brendon... to ask his mom if he can come over for dinner tonight." "Bu-"
"Not another word. He's a good kid and I know that. I know that he won't try to make any unwanted advances toward you because you two are just friends. But your mom and I were just friends." She waved her hand," Milo, don't bring me into this." I let out a heavy sigh before taking my bag and heading out to the bus.
I met up with Brendon at his locker and stared at him. "What's wrong," he had a regretful tone in his voice,"Look, if I got you in trouble I'm so sorry. I'll make it up to you." I felt a wave of relief rush over me with a little laugh,"Dinner with my parents. Tonight at six." He sighed with the same relief I had,"Sure. Why?"
I started walking him to his first period, "My mom thinks we're hooking up. I know, gross. Just be fake and they'll buy it." Brendon was nervous the first time he met my parents and it definitely showed, but my parents thought he was cute, so they let me hang out with him. But that was three years ago and they both know the effects of puberty on the brain. But, I can honestly say I've never thought of Brendon in a way more serious than close friends. My mother just can't seem to grasp that.
That evening, I tried my best to keep calm about this dinner. I had to look good, but not so good that I would surprise anyone. My hair was in a loose ponytail with a pin holding back the few loose strands that fell in front of my face. I went downstairs just as Brendon rang the doorbell and an uneasy feeling spread over me as I opened it. "Hey!" he said smiling in the doorway, just a nervous as I am. "Come on in," I said waving my arm towards the living room.
"Hello, Brendon. It's nice to see you today." My father said sitting on the couch across from him. My father waved me into the kitchen with my mother. "You two are going to interrogate him aren't you?" I asked slumping down at the table. My mom sighed and turned to face me,"We just want to keep you safe. That's all," I moaned like a child,"Mom, I'm seventeen. I know who to trust and I know how to keep myself safe. I'm not a kid anymore."
She sat next to me and put her arm around me,"I know, but your father and I want to make sure you make the right choices. You'll understand when you have children of your own. I think the guys may be done talking,so go upstairs and get your brother." She smiled at me making me feel just a little bit better.
I walked into the living room to Brendon and my dad conversing and laughing. "Well, you two seem to be getting along," I said joyfully. Brendon smiled and nodded at me as I made my way upstairs. "Mom said to come down for dinner," I stuck my head in my brother's room. "Are they roasting Brendon?" he chucked getting off his bed. Hunter and Brendon were as close as you could be to your friend's little sibling. Brendon didn't mind his company and Hunter had someone to look up to.I pulled his arm and playfully pushed him downstairs, laughing. "Hey, man." Brendon greeted hi-fiving his pupil.
We all sat down at the table, and Brendon made the mistake of sitting across from my mom and next to me. After about thirty munites of talking about school, my mom spoke for the first time during the dinner. "So Brendon, are you going to the junior prom?" He quickly looked at me and then at the woman in front of him. "Um-maybe, if I get a date to go with me,"he said fiddling with his thumbs. "Just ask Madyilyn." My father chimed in startling me. Brendon gave a nervous laugh as Hunter changed the subject.
"Sorry for my parents in there," I said walking him to his car in the chilly air. "No, It's fine mine would have done much worse," He chuckled. "See you tomorrow?" "Tomorrow." He pulled me into a small hug before waving me good-bye. Despite all of this, I didn't feel awkward after his hug, just safe.
