Chapter 01 : Sunset

I came gome from work early for my mother’s birthday and I promised her that I’ll be the one who’ll cook the food and won’t buy any from the convenient store like we usually do. It was a tough day but, if it’s for my mother, why not do it? It’s her special day. I get my keys and open the door.

“ Oka-san, I’m home!” I check the kitchen but she wasn’t there.

“ Oka-san..? Where are you?” I called her once again, I still didn’t get a response. Until I heard something fall from upstairs.. could that be? I quickly run upstairs and checked what happened. I chocked when I saw mom lying down the floor holding her chest and squirming. I run to her and shook her shoulder.

“ Oka-san?! A-are you okay? H-hang on!”  I grab my cellphone and dial an ambulance. After several minutes, the ambulance came and put mom on a stretcher, they slowly put her. Mom squeeze my hand and try to speak even it’s hard for her.

“ I-I’ll.. be f-fine..” and she gave me a cold timid smile. When she’s smiling at me, I feel peace.. but, it’s different today. Her smile isn’t the same as usual.
It scares me.. astound the deep of me.

Afterwards, we arrived at the hospital and they quickly enter mom in the Emergency Room. I asked them to let me in but, they refuse. All I can do is gaze at my mom as she enters. After the door was locked, I slam myself on the chair frailly. I cupped my face and started to think of everything. Remembering each of it. It makes me feel glum and numb. I tried to stand but I waver.. I pull out my phone and check the time. It was past 3PM we should be celebrating her birthday.. laughing.. telling stories.. cooking her favorite food. Everything turned out something I didn’t expect. I waited the doctor for 2hours and he appear.

“Who’s the relative of Mrs. Kurai?” He proclaim and he’s holding a file. It might be mom’s. I stand up and raise my hand.

“ I’m her son.” I looked at him bitterly. He looked at me puzzled.

“ Where’s her husband?” He asked me, hearing those words made me feel repulsive. I clenched my fist and frown.

“ He left us when I was young, so please.. Don’t ask someone who’s died 19 years ago! I’m here right? In front of you, physically and mentally. Why kept asking someone who doesn’t exist anymore when we needed he most?” I didn’t notice myself.
I started yelling and crying.

The doctor make a hand gesture to the guard that he’s incharge of this. He smile at me— a distasteful smile. I cupped my mouth and started to cry again.

“ Follow me, shun-kun.” Huh? how’d he know my name? He walk and pass by me, I gaze at him and shook my head. I have to follow him and know everything what happened to oka-san.

He entered his office and I stopped in front of the door. I was still astonished of everything. Someone pat my shoulder and brush my head.

“ Don’t sweat it, Shun-kun. I’m sorry for finding someone you despice the most..”

Those words urge my sense to get back and calm myself.

“ N-no.. It was fine.” I told him whild scratching my neck. He looked at me as of he was relieved or something. He grab the file and stood at me. He started to create a serious facial expression and tension. He clenched his hand on the file and looked at me again.

“ This..is an important matter and I know you can’t—“ I didn’t let him finish his sentense and break in.

“ You’re wrong.. I can! I..can..” He sighed heavily and sit down on his swivel chair and spoke out the words, the words that I don’t want to hear.. As if I was like a deaf when I hear those words.

“ Your mother has a Lung Cancer, I just found out it was Stage 4, she might hide it from you a long time ago.. I’m afraid that she can’t..” he paused looked at me. I hold ny head and lose my mind.

I know..

I was laughing, at the same time crying.. Thinking all of this is just a dream— ah no.
A nightmare, a dreadful nightmare.

“ Listen Shun-kun, Nishiya and I were college mates, that’s why I know your name.. But, I’m afraid she’ll last for.. 3 months from now..”

I gritted my teeth and talk, “ I-I’ll work for all the expenses.. Even it cost my health.. I’ll do everything for my mom’s sake! Just let her.. S-stay alive..” I collapse and struggle down, he catch me and put me on the couch.

“ Don’t push yourself.. It’ll be only.. 10% for her to accomplish the surgery. She might.. not take it. I’ll help you on her daily medicine.”

Then suddenly, someone knocked at the door.

“ Let me take this first.” As he opened the door, an old lady appear. She seems worried.

“ Akise-sensei.. does shinsei got a donor?” Huh? A donor? A transplant for? So, his name is Akise.. I heard that before from mom. Akise-sensei look down and inhale deeply.

“ I’m afraid but, there isn’t a donor yet.” The old lady smile sadly and wipe her tears.

“ I see..” she replied.

“ Can i.. see Kisa-chan?” Akise smiled timidly, why’re they smiling in this kind of situation? Seems the old lady notice me.

I slowly bow my head, sign of respect. She smiled at me.

“ Yes sensei, you can see him.” And the old lady leave the office.

“ Want to come with me, shun-kun? Kisa-chan’s room is next to your mom’s.” I nodded and followed him.

We took the elevator, the room was on the 3rd floor. I don’t know but, I feel agitated.. Is it because of mom? Or this Kisa they were talking about..

I know hospital since I’m working in a hospital too, specially the rooms.. But, this room is different it may be rose-painted but if you’ll look closely, everything seems dull and hollow. As we enter the room, there’s someone standing in front of the window. He’s pale skin is a perfect brim from the sun shines, it seems he’s watching the sunset. I don’t know but, my mouth suddenly move on its own.

“ The sunset looks so beautiful, isn’t it? “ I smiled as I said those words. He noticed me, and he clench his fist firmly. Akise and the old lady looked at me awfully, d-did I say something wrong?

He smiled but it was a dull smile.

“ Ah.. Oba-chan and Akise-sensei.. you’re here? And, it seems someone’s with you? I can hear 3 inhales..” He brush his fringe hair, I admit.. He was beautiful for a guy. As he looks towards to us the sun shine on his pale face and he smiled again.

“ Hmn, the sunset? I can feel the warm.. It was a peaceful warm, but.. I’m afraid.. I can’t see it.” He laughs flimsy. His eyes were like sapphire but, it was lifeless.. D-did I heard it right? H-he can’t see? Which means..

The old lady put a blanket on Kisa’s back and look at the window. He looked at me again and smile timidly.

“ He’s blind..”

I really.. said something that I shouldn’t.
