Based on a true story that happened to me and my cat this morning.
The alarm clock in John's room flashed 2:00 AM, a time when the whole world was asleep. Except for John.
John woke up when he felt a soft purring in his ear and fur on his face. When he opened his eyes, all he could see was darkness. Then he realised Sherlock was sleeping on his face. Again. He rolled over in bed and pushed Sherlock off his head. Sherlock climbed around and fell off the bed. John let out a small laugh, then went back to sleep. Sherlock purred under the bed for a while then stopped.
The room was filled with a deathly silence.
Worried, John stood up and started pulling stuff out from under the bed. "Oh, Sherlock where are you?" he mumbled to himself. Then, up came trotting from behind John, was Sherlock. The black of his fur blended in with the darkness, and when he fell off the bed he quietly slipped away to other parts of the flat. "Sherlock where were you!? You had me worried sick! I thought you were trapped under my bed!" John smiled, "I guess that's what cats do."
For the rest of the night, Sherlock slept at the foot of John's bed.
Keeping him safe.
Just like cats do.
