It's been lika a month since school started. We had our first quizes, I got great grades, while Katie barely got to the minimum.
'Lily, can I ask you a favor?' Katie asks me as soon as we get in my car. It's 7 a.m. and it's my turn to bring her to school.
'Yes, sure'
'So.. Caleb is failing English Literature, again, so he asked me if I knew someone who could help him out'
'Okay.. And?'
'You are very good in this subject. You always get great grades.'
'Yes, beacause it is my favorite subject'
'Exactly, so I was thinking, could you help him?'
I reflect on this absurd request for a moment.
'Lily?'
'Sorry, I was thinking'
'He'd pay you, you know'
'Oh, yes, I know that'
'So? Are you in?'
'Yes, why not?'
'Thank you' she tells me, very relieved.
'On one condition' I say, with my index finger up.
'I knew it!' she answers me 'What condition?'
'He personally has to ask me. I mean, you hate each other. Since when are you two so king to each other?'
'Okay, you're right. I'm going to tell him tonight, when I get home'
'Tell him he has to ask me tomorrow at school, during lunch break' I start laughing and so does Katie.
'I can't even imagine!' she keeps laughing.
'I can't wait!'The bell finally rings. The ones when the teacher talks but you just can't pay attention because you know that everything he says is also written on the book are the longest hours. Katie and I are the first ones to leave the classroom.
'I'm starving!' Katie screams out loud while we walk very very fast towards the exit.
'Don't tell me!' Once outside, we jump in my car. Destination: my house, as fast as possible.
20 minutes later we get home. When we go to the kitchen we see my dad who was waiting for us.
'Welcom back, honey' he says the second he sees me. I leave my bag on the floor and I hug him. I lay my head on his chest and sniff, dad's smell is the one that makes me feel at home.
'Hey Katie' he says, lifting his hand up to say hi.
'Mr Smith' Katie says. She has never called him Jonah, nor anything informal even if he insisted she'd call him Jonah.
'I'm making fried chicken. It'll be ready in a minute.' my dad exclaims. He lets me go and I reach Katie.
'Let's go upstairs and leave our bags there' I say, grabbing mine. My dad nod; after a lot of stairs we get to my room. It's pretty big. There's a big bed in the center. Lots and lots of dreamcatchers hang on the walls. There also is a big wardrobe and a desk, wich I never use. We leave our bags on the bed and we go to the bathroom, to wash our hands. I have my personal bathroom, even though it's not in my room: it's right next to it.
'Luch is reay!' my dad screams from dowstairs. We get down very, very fast and we sit at the kitchen table. We start eating, like we haven't eaten in months, then we take a piece of the pie that my dad bought this morning. When we're done we go back to my room and we lay on my bed.
'Hey, Lily. I almost forgot: I have something for you' she says getting up from my bed. She grabs her bag.
'You got me a present?'
'Well, no, not me.' she says while she takes out a piece of paper from her bag.
'Here, he asked me to give it to you, just today, during our break' she continues.
'Who asked you?'
She laughs
'Katie? Who?'
'Just look' she hands me the piece of paper.
I open it very slowly, I'm kind of scared to find out. I read out loud: To Lily, from Luke. There was his phone number.
'What?' I exclaim, surprised.
'I told you he liked you'
'Oh, no. What should I do now?'
'Call him, so you two go out on a date!' She's too excited.
'Katie, I don't even like him. He's too perfect, you know what I mean?' And he has a different girl every week. I could never trust him.'
'Well, maybe you are The one'
'Oh, shut up'
'Just keep the number. Maybe you'll change your mind when you're alone on a friday night because I'm out with my boyfriend.'
'Katie, you don't have a boyfriend' I start laughing.
'That doesn't matter. Plus, I can find one whenever I want!'
'Oh yeah? Even.. tomorrow?' I challenge her.
'You wanna bet?'
'Sure' we seal the bet with a handshake.
