I cleared off the table as Ms. Chosemyer showed the husband and wife who are unable to bear a child around the place.
How do I know that?
I hack into the system. The visitors looked at me then at each other.
They kept glancing at me until Ms. Chosmyer noticed that weren't paying attention to her anymore.
"Oh yes, that's Akeesha, she, well, she helps out a lot, one of our older kids."
"How long had she been here?" The young woman asks.
"About 5 years."The woman nods.
"Now, to the playroom."
I snort.
Yes, the playroom.
It consists of a shattered T.V. screen, a table, and some toy car with missing wheels. Oh what fun.The couple look at me when I snorted and a smile hinted on the husbands face.
My eyes widened.
The last time I saw an adult smile was five years ago.A smile.
I smile tugged at my lips and I turned back to do the dishes.
They left then and Katie came skipping in.
"They look like nice people. Do you think they have a dog?"
I shrug.
"I don't know Katie. Maybe."
"Well I think they have thousands of dogs." She says and skipped off.I heard laughter, so, me being a curious person, I go to see what it is.
The couple stood there laughing at a joke they must have made, the man turns to wipe his eyes and notices my presence.
"STOP IT RALPH! GIVE IT BACK!" I hear Katie yell.
Immediately I exit to deal with Ralph. Again.
Ralph is one of the older kids who likes to picknon the younger ones."Ralph. Give Katie back her camera."
"You ain't the boss of me."
"Ralph, give her back her camera please."
"Why don't ya make me?"
"Ralph, give it back now."
"Nah. I think I'll hold into it."
"Okay, I'll just have to go get your older brother."
Ralph glared at me and thrusted the camera at Katie.
"It's a hunk camera anyway." He huffed and marched away.Katie smiled at her camera and hugged it, thanking me she walked off.
The couple walked out then and left.
I walk to my room to my sister.
"Hi." I say as I walk in.
"Are they nice?" She asks.I shrug.
"They seem nicer then the last ones."
"Anyons nicer than them."
"Touché."She was lying on our bed with her hands folded behind her head.
The dinner bell rang then and the stampede began.
It was mashed potatoes and green beans with milk or water.
Then it was straight to bed."Good night Laqueesha."
"Good night Akeesha."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
-
I woke up to crying and heavy breathing.I knew what it was.
"Laqueesha, it's okay. Shhh it's okay, it's just a bad dream."
She grabbed my hand and her eyes snapped open.
Shivers ran down her spine and it vibrated my body.
She hugged me and cried some more.
I never speak of those dreams.
She tells me what happened this time and I console her."Shhh, you're fine. I'm here. It's okay."
I go back to bed and she sleeps in my bed too.
I strike her hair as she drifts off to sleep again and I pray she gets better sleep this time around.
I wrap my arm around her and fall asleep too.
